This tangka shows the Buddha Shakyamuni holding a begging bowl and gesturing to the earth to witness his enlightened state. The Buddha’s golden complexion evokes his transcendent nature, and his patchwork robe denotes nonattachment. He meditates upon a radiating lotus and is attended by the bodhisattvas Maitreya and Manjushri, readily identified by their attributes—a flask and a sword, respectively—and each supported by projecting lotus stems. The central triad is framed by throne pillars surmounted by vyalas, which merge into foliate scrolls with makaras and terminate in an eagle form. The rows of Buddhas and sixteen arhats indicate Shakyamuni’s status as a cosmic Buddha. In the lowest register three seated monks are flanked by the four guardian kings (lokapala). In the lower left sits the officiating lama, named in the inscription as Lobzang Dondrup, and likely the patron of this painting. Mahakala stands at lower right, providing protection. This tangka may be associated with the tradition of western Tibetan monastic painting centered on the province of Guge. In the absence of dated works, the securing of this style remains problematic, but parallels with seventeenth-century murals suggest a date in that region, as witnessed in murals preserved at the monasteries of Tabo, Tsaparang, and Tholing.Free picture Buddha Shakyamuni as Lord of the Munis integrated with the OffiDocs web apps
