This large panel is part of an important but little understood group of related embroidered Chinese export textiles. They share a common layout with a central roundel in a rectangular field surrounded by multiple borders. Chinese textiles came to the Americas via the annual trips of Spain\u2019s Manila galleons between Acapulco (and Lima) and the Philippines. While no embroideries from this group have been found in Mexico or South America, their influence is evident, since similar layouts and motifs are woven into a small group of extant Peruvian tapestries.
