An inscription in Chinese written on the base of this seal indicates that it was commissioned for use by a Tibetan monk whose name can be transliterated as Yangshidangpu. The seal's Chinese characters read jing xie jie lu, or "study the law [meaning Buddhism] with forbearance." The use of seals is integral to Chinese court activities and literati culture; such objects were often awarded to dignitaries from other countries both to demonstrate their ties to China and as an act of respect.
