Modotti was an Italian woman of great beauty, a revolutionary, and an artist. She acted in silent films in Hollywood before moving to Mexico, where she was joined by Edward Weston from 1923 to 1926. He taught her to photograph, and though she continued after his return to America, she photographed less and devoted herself to political causes.
