Hand embroidered printed cotton stamped in black so the tailor could use needle and thread to show the specialty marks of the seamen rated as petty officer and line petty officer. Some people collect printed patterns. By 1886 the U.S. Navy adopted chevrons for Petty Officer 3rd Class, Petty Officer 2nd Class and Petty Officer 3rd Class. On April 1st, 1893 Chief Petty Officer rank was created.
