In 1837 the United States Navy had the ranks of Midshipmen, Masters, Lieutenants, Commanders and Captain. Likewise, the Mexican Navy also had fewer rank titles until the U.S. Civil War When David Glasgow Farragut become the first commodore, then first rear admiral, vice admiral and then full admiral. "Commodore" was an honorary title for senior captains. In 1837 the same rank marks were used by the Mexican Army and Mexican Navy.
