Hand drawn diagram to help me visualize how I would use a 4-Track 1/4" cassette recorder, in tandem with an old Sony (I mean your dad's or grandpa's) circa early 1960s 1/4" reel-to-reel stereo (2-Track) to allow me to record more tracks with better quality. This was before I bought a TSR-8 Tascam 8-Track 1/2" reel-to-reel which I replaced the Sony with.

Anyway, on "The Song That Never Ends," I basically combined the powers of the 2 & 4 Track machines, which provided a much higher sound quality than the 4-Track alone, of course, because both the 2 & 4 Track recorders were utilizing just a 1/4" width of tape. Much less need to ping-pong tracks, and or muddy up the sound by relying on 1 Track of the 4 Track to hold too much musical information...remember 1 Track on the 4 Track is 1/4 of 1/4" of tape width which means it's going to be fairly low fidelity if you load it up with mixes of other tracks...

So much for the technical details. Have a nice day.
