Consulting Detective P. Ganguly arrives in Shillong to investigate a locked-room death in a secluded, pine-forested estate. Even as he begins his investigation, more deaths follow. Soon he is dealing with a bewildering array of persons of interest: From an English lit professor to a research geneticist to an ex-Gorkha Rifles officer. But he receives generous help from a Superintendent of Meghalaya police. Plus, Mr. Ganguly discusses his case almost on a daily basis with his wife Urvashi who offers helpful pointers. A mysterious character named Aviroop Sehgal invites PG to a momo dinner. There, over a bottle of beer, PG realizes he has stepped right into a deadly international intrigue. He might need his .357 Smith & Wesson Magnum after all. His investigation now takes him to the tri-nation border region of Arunachal Pradesh where a tea plantation is situated, owned by the victim of the locked-room mystery. It is based on what he discovered there that the Indian Armed Forces mobilize their formidable war machines in Northeast India, and move Carrier Strike Group Laharisawar to Bay of Bengal. Mr. Ganguly survives a night of stark terror and in the morning, solves the locked-room mystery. For a long time afterwards, when all the dark facts have receded into archived memory, there still lingers for Mr. Ganguly the ardor of the pine-scented interlude.
