This is the particulate found on a south facing suburban window sill in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
The sill was cleaned and prepared for collection. This sample is from sunrise to sunset.
I created a control sill which showed the same background noise as the sample sill.
The control was created by closing the window to show the particulate was not contaminated by some other phenomenon, ie house hold dust on cleaning day, etc.
The magnifications are shown on each slide. 100x, 600x and 1200x.
The particulate is made up of a number of organic materials and has coincided with the recent Eucalyptus pollen burst. This along with quiet heavy rain fall created a soup of floating particulates. Pollens can be seen with sharp edges or hooks while the ash is round and smooth. This is why pollens will generally be caught in the nostrils and soft glottis of humans. The ash will make it all the way through the natural filters of the body all the way to the lung structures.
Probably a good idea not to do strenuos exercise outdoors.
Wear a dust mask.
