Opposition to the establishment of Christs statue in Karan

The previous Karnataka government had suggested 10 acres of land for the construction of a 114-feet-tall statue of Jesus Christ at a place Kanakapura 65 kilometres from Bangalore. But now an extremist organisation by the name of Hindu Jagran Ved has demanded from the BJP government to withdraw the suggestion.

During the demonstrations staged by the Hindu-right organisations, slogans like "Jai Shri Ram" and "We'll give blood, but not Kapalabetta" were raised. Now the Sangh Parivar has given an ultimatum of 25th January to the State government to withdraw the land's agreement. The Sangh Parivar has also said that "If the government does not act till 25th January, the opposition will get stronger and we won't stop until it has been withdrawn. The said organisations have also demanded that the officers who had permitted the land allotment must be tried in Court and that the State should bring out an anti-conversion law.

For the said statue, 8000 families have donated a lakh rupees. Harobele village, where the statue was to be erected, is situated within the constituency of Congress leader Shivakumar. D. Shivakumar had brought the 10-acre land from the previous government with his money. He had laid its foundation stone on the 25th of December last year. According to reports, Christian families number to 3500 here. The people of the area say that their ancestors have been living here since 1662. The Hindu residents of the area do not have any objection to the statue. No case of forced religious conversion is present here, but it is only on RSS' behest that such rumours are being spread.
