"Out in the Woods"
by: Wes Robert Ward
One Autumn day out in the woods with the leaves falling all around me, I stood among the trees of many colors before me, standing there amongst a clearing surrounded by trees with leaves raining down around me in red, yellow, and brown.
There were small trees, big trees, thin trees, trees with many branches, trees with broken branches, dead trees, dying trees, trees that lived a million years or more, and even baby trees being born.
And as I stood there among these wise trees of olden days that have seen centuries of history fly by like the wind, I wanted to ask them what they have seen? What wonders they witnessed? What historical events passed them by?
For our human eyes can only see so much, but never enough unlike trees that have seen the world created before us. From prehistoric times to our modern days of now, trees have seen more than any human ever known.
But alas like trees usually do, they do not say a word not even if you threaten them with an axe or try to interrogate them for hours on end with a lie detector test, and truth serum never works because the hypodermic needle can't break their hard bark skin it only breaks the hypodermic needle.
Sadly with a somewhat remorse, I was to turn about soon after, throw in the towel, and give up this wonderful one-sided conversation with these untalkable trees until I turned my head to gaze upon this one tree with the name of BILL carved on his bark.
I replied as I held my hand out, "Bill, where have you been? Tell me what you've seen? A hundred years ago did my Great Grandfather come by here and do his business in the bushes by you? I must ask, what is the meaning of life, my friend? For only trees know because you grow and you grow, and the more you grow the more you know."
And to my confusing perplexing surprise, Bill wavered about in the cool breeze and said absolutely nothing, how rude!!! It was like being snubbed by a sycamore tree!!!
I asked as I pointed my finger at him, "So Bill, you're just going to stand there and play deaf and dumb, huh? Ignore me as if I was an annoying acorn tree, huh?"
Bill wavered in the wind again, not saying nothing and not doing much, just blowing about in the cool Autumn wind, just ignoring me as if I was nothing more than a mulberry bush.
I calmly said before him with my hands on my hips, "So you're going to do me like that, huh Bill? Give me the cold shoulder and silent treatment, huh Bill? Well that's fine by me, pal. I hope somebody turns you into toilet tissue like they did George."
And as I walked out of the woods complaining of unspeakable trees, I didn't happen to notice an old wooden sign nearby that read, "Spanish speaking trees only."
