Download or edit the free picture Windows 95 logo.sys files (logo, logos, logow) for GIMP online editor. It is an image that is valid for other graphic or photo editors in OffiDocs such as Inkscape online and OpenOffice Draw online or LibreOffice online by OffiDocs.

These are the startup logo files from Windows 95. If you're running Windows 98 with 98lite, it's nice to replace the Windows 98 logos with these versions.

  • logo.sys - startup logo, which goes in C:\\.
  • logo-msie.sys - also startup logo, but includes the "Microsoft Internet Explorer" text from later versions. Rename to logo.sys and put it in C:\\ if you want to use it.
  • logos.sys - shutdown logo ("it's safe to turn off your computer"). Goes in C:\\Windows\\.
  • logow.sys - shutting down logo. Goes in C:\\Windows\\.
The logos are essentially BMP files.

Modifying boot logos is simple in principle: rename the .SYS files to .BMP, and then edit them with any program (like Photoshop). Make sure they're set to 256 colors when you save them, then rename them back to .SYS. Put the file in the right place (see above) and restart your computer to see it.

There is one important detail, though: Windows displays these logos in VGA mode, which means color fidelity will not be 100% accurate unless you reduce the color depth to 12-bits per pixel. You can ignore this if you want (it'll work even if you don't do any of following I'm about to explain), but those who want perfect color accuracy will need to keep this in mind.

VGA has a palette size of 256 colors, but only 4,096 colors to choose
from\u20144 bits per channel, or 12 bit color. Programs such as Photoshop
assume that each color channel has 8 bits, which results in images that
have to be further reduced in color fidelity even if they use a 256
color palette.

This can be solved by processing the image according to the following steps:

  • Ensure you have your image open and in full color mode (32 bit).
  • Use the Posterize filter set to 64. This will properly set all colors in the image to a range of 0-63 per channel.
  • Reduce the image to a 256 color palette and save the resulting palette file.
  • Undo the color reduction and the Posterize filter.
  • Reduce the image to 256 colors using your previously saved palette.

This ensures the best quality for images within the confines of 12 bit colors.
