Eli above the barnyard, Flynn's calf Koni and large barn in the background. Fall, 1974?The roof you see in the distance is on the large barn. If you look at the roof, you\u2019ll see 4 courses of shakes. (The difference between a shake and a shingle is a shingle is sawn, thus has smooth sides. A shake is traditionally hand split with a froe and mallet, and is wavy and uneven on the faces.) The side of the barn\u2019s roof that you can see was about 18 feet from eave to peak, which makes each shake about 5 1/4 feet long (remember to account for the parts of the shakes unseen in the lower 3 courses).
It is my understanding that Verly Kesterson and his identical twin brother split the shakes that cover the barns, walls and roofs. They also built the chicken coop/kennel as well as also splitting many of the structural components for all three buildings. You can also see that there are no peak shakes, rather the far side's top course is somewhat longer than the near side. Rain in the area, which traditionally is in excess of 120 inches a year, falls predominantly towards the far side, thus limiting water leaking in.
