This was taken in July, 2015 at the Oregon Country Fair. I had been a Security Crew leader since 1981. At the 1995 Fair, I realized that I just wasn't having any fun any more, and if ya ain't having fun at the Country Fair, what's the point?

One of my newer crew members was, I felt, a seriously trustworthy person as well as someone I had come to respect and like very much. I explained how I was feeling and asked if he would be willing to take over temporarily, just until Eli was ready to be crew leader. He was happy to. So, I passed my crew leader position off to Brendan temporarily. That was 1995. Little did any of us know that Eli would decide to take a few years off from the Fair too. Those “few” years would become 20 years.

In 2015, Eli decided to go for it. We talked about it and he agreed to allow me to be a member of his crew. :)

This picture was taken just beyond The Water Gate, aka, the end of the Fair. I really love this photo.

One of the craziest things that ever happened to me at the Oregon Country Fair: Unlike most arts and crafts fairs, the OCF owns its property and the booths are permanent. One booth was Chez Ray, a sit down restaurant/booth with family style seating. If you wanted to eat thre it required reservations, and all of the reservations were always gone by noon Friday, the first day of the Fair. During the rest of the year, Ray operated a mobile, world wide movie catering business. Sounds like a very big deal, and I’m sure it was. That said, he never took a job that would require him to miss the Fair. Yea, the Fair was that fucking great. But I digress.

One night, I had been served and was taking my seat at one of the tables. My seat was the next to the last on that particular bench. Dinner was always fresh salmon (sadly not spring run Chinook, but it was July!), a rice dish (often a pilaf), a fresh vegetable or perhaps a medley of them, and a simple dessert. So, I sat my skinny ass down and started to eat. I hadn’t been sitting long when a guy in odd clothes sat down next to me. Mind you, unusual clothes aren't that unusual there, but I immediately recognized the Dalai Lama! We chatted through our respective meals and at least I totally enjoyed myself! And while I doubt he would remember me particularly, I'll bet he remembers the Country Fair!
