Facts list regarding the differences between localizations and regions for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone / Philosopher's Stone IBM PC game.Image featured displays the visual differences between the United Kingdom release for Philosopher's Stone, left, vs the United States / North American release for Sorcerer's Stone, right.
Comparison created and provided by Harry Potter Ganes Archive Project community member, HP_Freddo.
HP_Freddo's detailed explanation regarding the regional differences:
"The US and UK versions have regional differences. For example, the fire crab does not appear at the entrance to Hagrid's forest and was replaced by a log (1:07:31)*. Many spells like Wingardium Leviosa still flash the Flipendo (27:48) spell and the platforms @warrington (Harry Potter Archive Project community member) mentions were changed. Logically, the European versions are based on that UK version so it is logical that they retain their characteristics. Another possibility is that the UK version is older than the US version. The wall hole in the tortoise area is still in the US version without any apparent function. Also, something to note is that the UK version is missing scenes of Ron handing Harry the chrome which confirms this theory.
Cont.
Upon further investigation I have discovered that not all UK versions have these changes. Here I leave you a comparative image with the differences that I found and the one mentioned by the partner. Possibly and as I pointed out before, this UK version is older than the US version and that would explain why in the US version the fire crab retains the hole in the wall that does not fulfill any function. Quite interesting. Comparing it with other locations I have not found other differences. They seem to be the only or the most notable. What's more, possibly many locations were made based on the US or UK version. There are also UK versions with the characteristics of the US so it is understandable that these differences have never been noticed."

It's not known what exactly this patch accomplished, or if it was region-specific vs universal.
