I finally found an image of my fathers homebuilt airplane. The RB-1 was built at home in Canoga Park from my fathers design. I should mention he really is one of the steely-eyed rocket scientist guys you read about but never get to meet.

My father's story is one that would inspire. After losing a leg in a crane mishap which ended his military service he put himself through school. Starting out as a pen and paper draftsman, attending night school and becoming an Aerospace Engineer. He worked on a who's who list of American Aircraft and Space Vehicles and Propulsion Systems. Some that I can remember were the Saturn V Booster, Lockeed L-1011, Space Shuttle and some of the Skunk Projects. He was an early member of EAA Chapter 40 here in the San Fernando Valley.

The Plane was hangered at Shaffer Air Ambulance at Nan Nuys Airport for a time and at Whitman Airport. We trailered the airplane from Canoga Park to Norton Ohio along with the family when he was laid off from Rocketdyne and went to work for Hydraulic Research. When he was called back to Rocketdyne we moved back to the valley.

The RB-1 Ray's Rebel is an two-seat light sporting aircraft designed and built by Ray Bishop.
The Ray's Rebel is a braced low-wing monoplane with a welded steel-tube fuselage covered in fabric. The wing is an all-wood construction covered with Ceconite, it has endplates on the wing tips and frise-type ailerons but has no flaps or trim tabs. The RB-1 is powered by a 125 hp Lycoming O-290-G air-cooled piston engine driving a two-bladed fixed pitch propeller. The landing gear is a fixed reverse cantalever structure and fixed tailwheel type with a fibreglass fairing over the wheel. The enclosed cockpit has two side-by-side seats under a rearward-sliding canopy. Bishop started designing the aircraft in October 1954 and started construction in February 1955, fifteen years later it was completed and now registered N971RB. The RB-1 first flew on 28 March 1970.
