On August 15, 1998, at 3:10 in the afternoon, a car bomb went off in a crowded shopping area. The bombing killed thirty-one people, to include a woman who was pregnant with twins, and injuring many more. Victims were of both Catholic and Protestant faith, and included five tourists to Northern Ireland--three from the Republic of Ireland and two from Spain.

The bomb was set by a splinter group of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) who opposed the ceasefire that came from the Good Friday Agreement. However, those members who set the bomb have not been found and brought to justice.

In the aftermath, sympathy cards and gifts arrived in Omagh. Town officials kept and collected these items, but soon realized that they did not have a place to store these items. The items were then turned over to the Omagh Public Library, where they are cataloged and preserved.
