Excel Template for Content Planning Income Statement (Basic)
This Excel template is specifically designed to support Content Planning by integrating financial tracking into your content strategy workflow. While traditional income statements track revenue and expenses for businesses, this adapted version focuses on quantifying the financial performance of content initiatives — such as blog posts, videos, social media campaigns, email newsletters, and podcasts. It serves as a “Basic” version: intentionally simple yet powerful enough to help marketers, content teams, and small business owners assess ROI without requiring advanced accounting knowledge.
Sheet Names
The template includes three sheets:
- Income Statement — Primary sheet displaying monthly revenue and expenses related to content creation and distribution.
- Content Log — A detailed record of all published content pieces with metadata for tracking performance.
- Dashboards (Basic) — A visual summary with simple charts reflecting key metrics derived from the Income Statement and Content Log.
Table Structures & Columns
Income Statement Table
This table is structured as a classic income statement but tailored for content-related financials. It uses the following columns:
| Category | Month (Jan, Feb, ...) | Total (Formula) |
|---|---|---|
| REVENUE | ||
| Advertising Revenue | Number (Currency) | =SUM(B3:B14) |
| Sponsored Content Income | Number (Currency) | =SUM(B4:B15) |
| Affiliate Commissions | Number (Currency) | =SUM(B5:B16) |
| Total Revenue | =SUM(B3:B7) | =SUM(C3:C7) |
| EXPENSES | ||
| Content Creation (Writers, Designers) | Number (Currency) | =SUM(B9:B20) |
| Software Subscriptions | Number (Currency) | =SUM(B10:B21) |
| Video Production Costs | Number (Currency) | =SUM(B11:B22) |
| Advertising Spend | Number (Currency) | =SUM(B12:B23) |
| Total Expenses | =SUM(B9:B14) | =SUM(C9:C14) |
| NET INCOME | ||
| Net Income (Revenue - Expenses) | =B8-B15 | =C8-C15 |
Content Log Table
This companion sheet logs each content asset with the following columns:
| ID | Title | Type (Blog, Video, Social) | Published Date | Cost (USD) | Revenue Generated (USD) | Traffic/Impressions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| #001 | Fitness Tips for Beginners | Blog | 2024-03-15 | 150.00 | 89.50 | |
| #002 | <Diet Plan Video Series | Video | 2024-03-18 | 450.00 |
All entries in the Content Log auto-populate the Income Statement using structured references (e.g., SUMIFS(ContentLog[Cost],ContentLog[Published Date],">="&B1)) to categorize monthly costs and revenue by publication date.
Formulas Required
=SUMIFS(ContentLog[Revenue], ContentLog[Published Date], ">= "&StartOfMonth, ContentLog[Published Date], "<= "&EndOfMonth)— to auto-calculate monthly revenue from the log.=SUMIFS(ContentLog[Cost], ...)— for monthly content production costs.=B8-B15— net income formula (Revenue – Expenses).=IF(B17<0,"Loss","Profit")— dynamic label for net outcome.
Conditional Formatting
- Net Income Cell: Green if > $0, Red if < $0.
- Expenses per Category: Highlight cells where cost exceeds revenue for that content type (e.g., a video costing $500 but generating only $120).
- Average ROI Column: In Content Log, calculate ROI = Revenue / Cost. Apply color scale: red < 1x, yellow 1-2x, green > 2x.
Instructions for the User
- Start by entering your monthly dates in row 1 of the Income Statement.
- In “Content Log,” add each content piece with its cost and associated revenue. Use the dropdowns for “Type” to standardize entries.
- The Income Statement will auto-update based on published dates. No manual data entry needed there.
- Check the Dashboard sheet weekly: if a content type (e.g., videos) consistently shows negative ROI, consider reallocating budget.
- Use “Net Income” trends to justify hiring more writers or investing in better tools — this template turns intuition into data-driven decisions.
Example Rows
Content Log Example:
| #003 | Email Newsletter: Spring Promo | 2024-04-10 | $85.00 | $315.75 | |
| #AVERAGE ROI: | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blog: 1.8x | Video: 0.6x | Social: 2.3x |
Recommended Charts & Dashboards
The “Dashboards (Basic)” sheet includes three simple charts:
- Bar Chart: Monthly Net Income — visualize trends over time.
- Pie Chart: Expense Breakdown — how your budget is distributed across categories.
- Scatter Plot: Cost vs Revenue per Content Piece — identify outliers and high-performing assets.
This template bridges the gap between editorial planning and financial accountability. With its “Basic” design, it avoids clutter while delivering actionable insights. Whether you’re a solo creator or leading a team, this tool transforms content from an art into an asset — measurable, trackable, and profitable.
