Table Structure & Columns (Balance Sheet - Annual)

The primary worksheet "Balance Sheet (Annual)" uses a structured table with the following columns:

Category Description Type of Data Example Entry
Asset Type Classification of the asset (e.g., Real Estate, Vehicle, Savings, Investments) Text/Category List (Dropdown) Savings Account
Value as of Jan 1 Beginning-of-year market or book value Currency (USD) $25,000.00
Value as of Dec 31 End-of-year value after gains, losses, or withdrawals Currency (USD) $28,500.00
Change in Value Automatically calculated difference between Dec 31 and Jan 1 values Currency (USD) - Formula-Based =Dec31-StartValue
Annual Growth Rate (%) Percentage change in asset value over the year (calculated) Percentage (Formatted) +14%

Data Types and Formulas Required

All cells are designed to maintain accuracy and prevent data entry errors through structured inputs:

  • Starting Balance (Jan 1): Manually entered by the user.
  • Ending Balance (Dec 31): Manually updated at year-end or automatically pulled from other sheets.
  • Change in Value: Formula = =F2-E2 (where E2 is Jan 1, F2 is Dec 31).
  • Annual Growth Rate (%): Formula = =IF(E2=0, "N/A", (F2-E2)/E2). This prevents division by zero errors.
  • Total Assets: Formula at the bottom of the asset section: =SUM(F:F) (sum of Dec 31 values).
  • Total Liabilities: Summation formula from "Liability Details" sheet using a linked cell.
  • Net Worth: Formula = =TotalAssets - TotalLiabilities. This appears at the bottom of the balance sheet.
  • YTD Net Worth Change: Formula compares current year's net worth to last year's (if stored).

Conditional Formatting Rules

To enhance readability and highlight financial trends, the template includes:

  • Positive Growth in Assets: Green fill for any cell with a positive growth rate.
  • Negative Growth in Assets: Red background for values showing loss or depreciation.
  • High Liabilities (Top 3): Orange highlight on the three largest debt entries to draw attention.
  • Net Worth Trend Indicator: If net worth increased year-over-year, cell turns green; if decreased, red.
  • Duplicate Entry Warning: Conditional rule flags duplicate asset descriptions to avoid data errors.
