Formulas Required

The template uses several powerful Excel formulas for automation and accuracy:

  • Balanced Amount (Column F): =SUMIF($E$2:E2, "Income", $D$2:D2) + SUMIF($E$2:E2, "Expense", -$D$2:D2) — This calculates the running balance based on all previous entries.
  • Net Income for the Day (Dashboard Sheet): =SUMIFS('Daily Transactions'!D:D, 'Daily Transactions'!E:E, "Income", 'Daily Transactions'!A:A, TODAY())
  • Total Expenses (Monthly Overview): =SUMIF('Daily Transactions'!C:C, "Utilities", 'Daily Transactions'!D:D) — Used per category in the monthly summary.
  • Auto-Update Date in Dashboard: =TODAY() — Ensures the current date is always displayed in summary headers.

Conditional Formatting

To enhance readability and alert users to financial patterns, the template includes conditional formatting rules:

  • Negative Balance Highlighting: If any row’s “Balanced Amount” is below $0, the entire row turns red.
  • High Expense Alerts: If an expense exceeds $100 in a single transaction, the cell background turns yellow.
  • Income vs. Expense Color Coding: Income entries are marked with light green; expenses with light red.
  • Trend Arrows in Dashboard: Uses icon sets to show month-over-month changes in income and expenses (↑, →, ↓).

  1. Open the template and enable macros if prompted (required for auto-updating charts).
