Excel Template for Home Management – Project Timeline (Employee View)
This comprehensive Excel template is specifically designed for Home Management purposes, integrating a structured Project Timeline format from the perspective of an Employee View. This means that household members (referred to as "employees" in this context) can track their assigned tasks, deadlines, and progress within the home environment. Whether managing household chores, home repairs, family events, or renovation projects—this template transforms everyday domestic responsibilities into a professional-style project management system.
Sheet Names
The workbook contains four distinct worksheets designed to support different aspects of home management:
- Timeline Overview: The central dashboard displaying the full project timeline with task assignments, start/end dates, and status indicators.
- Task Assignments: A detailed table listing every task, assigned employee (household member), due date, priority level, and progress.
- Progress Tracking: A dynamic sheet where employees can update their daily or weekly completion percentages and add notes.
- Dashboard & Charts: An analytical view with visualizations such as Gantt charts, completion rate graphs, and overdue task alerts.
Table Structures and Columns (Task Assignments Sheet)
The Task Assignments sheet serves as the backbone of the template. It contains a well-structured table with 10 columns:
| Column | Data Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Task ID | Text (Auto-generated) | A unique identifier for each task (e.g., "HMK-001"). Uses a formula to auto-increment. |
| Task Description | Text | Description of the home management task (e.g., “Clean Bathroom,” “Schedule HVAC Maintenance”). |
| Assigned Employee | List (Dropdown) | Predefined household members: Alice, Bob, Carol, David. Users can edit the list to add or remove names. |
| Start Date | Date | The date work on this task begins (e.g., 2025-04-01). |
| Due Date | Date | Deadline for completion. |
| Status | Dropdown (Not Started, In Progress, Completed, Overdue) | Tracks current status using predefined options. |
| Priority | Dropdown (Low, Medium, High) | Ranks importance of the task. |
| Progress (%) | Numeric (0–100) | Percentage completed by the employee; updateable via user input or progress tracker. |
| Notes | Text (Optional) | Space for comments, reminders, or instructions. |
| Last Updated | Date (Auto-filled) | Dynamically updates when a row is edited using a VBA or formula-based timestamp. |
Formulas Required
The following formulas ensure dynamic functionality across sheets:
=IF(TODAY() > [Due Date], "Overdue", IF([Progress] = 100, "Completed", IF([Progress] > 0, "In Progress", "Not Started"))– Automatically updates the Status column based on date and progress.=TEXT([Start Date], "mmm dd") & " - " & TEXT([Due Date], "mmm dd")– Creates a formatted date range for display in the timeline.=IF(ISBLANK([Progress]), 0, [Progress])– Ensures progress defaults to zero if blank.=COUNTIF(Status_Column, "Overdue")– Counts overdue tasks on the Dashboard sheet.=SUMPRODUCT((Priority="High")*(Status="Not Started"))– Calculates number of high-priority pending tasks for alerts.
Conditional Formatting Rules
To enhance readability and visual prioritization:
- Status Column: Red text for "Overdue", green for "Completed", yellow for "In Progress".
- Due Date Column: Highlight cells in red if the date is past today.
- Priorities: Apply color coding: High (Red), Medium (Yellow), Low (Green).
- Progress Bar: Use data bars to show completion percentage visually within the Progress (%) column.
User Instructions
Open the template and save it with a new filename (e.g., "Home_Management_Timeline_2025.xlsx").

Select the appropriate employee from the dropdown in the "Assigned Employee" column.

On a weekly basis, each employee logs into their assigned row to update their progress percentage and add notes in the “Notes” column.
Visit the Dashboard & Charts sheet to view Gantt-style timelines, completion rates, and overdue task alerts.
To track overall home health, use the summary KPIs: Total Tasks, Completed Tasks (%), Overdue Tasks.
