Formulas Required
The template uses dynamic formulas to automate tracking and calculations. Key formulas include:
- Balanced (Column F):
=IF(ROW()-1=1, [Income] - [Expense], OFFSET(F1, -1, 0) + [Income] - [Expense])
This calculates the running balance starting from the first row and updating each day based on prior balance. - Total Income (Row 8):
=SUM(D:D) - Total Expenses (Row 9):
=SUM(E:E) - Net Balance (Row 10):
=D8 - E8 - Category Totals: Use SUMIF to calculate total spending per category (e.g.,
=SUMIF(C:C, "Food & Groceries", E:E)) in the Dashboard.
Conditional Formatting
To enhance visibility and promote financial awareness, the following conditional formatting rules are applied:
- Over-budget alerts: If any category expense exceeds its weekly limit (set manually or via formula), cells turn red.
- High Expense Thresholds: Expenses over $100 automatically highlighted in yellow to draw attention.
- Negative Balance Warning: Any negative balance in the "Balanced" column is displayed in bold red font.
- Cumulative Trend Lines: In the Dashboard, positive trends are green, negative trends are red (using data bars).
User Instructions
- Setup: Open the template and update the "Expense Categories" sheet with your household's unique categories if needed.
- Daily Entry: Enter transactions daily. For income, leave Expense blank; for expenses, leave Income blank. Use correct category names from the dropdown.
- Review Weekly: At the end of each week (or Sunday), review totals on the Dashboard and adjust next week's budget accordingly.

- Backup: Save a copy weekly as a .xlsx file with the week date (e.g., WeeklyBudget_060324.xlsx) for historical tracking.
Recommended Charts & Dashboards
The Dashboard & Summary sheet includes:
- Pie Chart: Shows percentage distribution of weekly expenses by category (e.g., 35% Food, 20% Utilities).
- Bar Chart: Compares actual spending vs. budgeted amounts for each category.
- Line Graph: Tracks weekly net balance over time (e.g., last 4–6 weeks) to visualize financial health trends.
