  • PPMT and IPMT functions: Break down principal and interest portions of each repayment.
  • = Budget Allocation / CAC Target: Estimates customers per channel in Marketing Budget Allocation sheet.
  • = (Customers * LTV - Budget) / Budget: Calculates ROI for each marketing channel.
  • Sum of monthly revenue minus monthly expenses: Determines net profit trajectory on Projections sheet.

CONDITIONAL FORMATTING

  • ROI values > 100% are highlighted in green (excellent return).
  • ROI values between 0–100% are yellow (break-even or moderate).
  • ROI < 0% are red (loss-making channel—requires reassessment).
  • Monthly net profit below zero is shaded orange, indicating cash flow risk.
  • Budget allocation percentages summing to >100% trigger a warning message using data validation.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE USER

  1. Start by entering your loan details (Amount, Rate, Term) on the “Loan Details” sheet.
  2. On “Marketing Budget Allocation,” assign portions of your loan to each marketing channel. Use dropdowns for consistency.
  3. Update assumptions in the “Assumptions & Notes” tab: CAC targets, LTVs, conversion rates based on market research or industry benchmarks (e.g., SaaS startups: CAC ~$150–$500).
  4. Do not edit formulas—they are locked. Only input data in blue-shaded cells.
  5. Review the Dashboard for ROI trends and cash flow sustainability. If net profit turns negative for more than 3 consecutive months, consider reducing channel spend or negotiating loan terms.
  6. Use “Scenario Manager” (Data > What-If Analysis) to test optimistic, realistic, and pessimistic cases (e.g., 10% lower conversion rate).

EXAMPLE ROWS

Loan Details:
Loan Amount: $50,000 | Interest Rate: 6% | Term: 24 months → Monthly Payment = $2,217.84

Marketing Budget Allocation:
Channel: Facebook Ads → Budget: $15,000 | CAC Target: $30 | Conversion Rate: 3% → Estimated Customers = 500 | LTV = $250 → ROI = (500 * 250 - 15,00) / 15,624.99 ≈ +738%

Projections (Month 6):
New Customers: 87 | Revenue: $21,750 | Marketing Spend: $4,500 | Loan Payment: $2,218 → Net Profit = $15,032

RECOMMENDED CHARTS & DASHBOARD

  • Pie Chart: Marketing Budget Allocation by channel (on Dashboard).
  • Line Chart: Monthly Net Profit vs. Loan Payments over 24 months—critical to visualize breakeven point.
  • Bar Chart: ROI per marketing channel to identify top performers.
  • Combo Chart: Revenue (columns) and Cumulative Loan Balance (line) overlaid to assess if revenue growth outpaces debt accumulation.

This template is not just a financial tool—it’s a strategic compass for startups. It ensures marketing spending isn’t guesswork, but a calculated investment with clear payback timelines. By integrating loan repayment dynamics with channel-level marketing metrics, this template prevents the common startup pitfall of overspending on campaigns without understanding how debt impacts survival. Use it to attract investors, optimize spend, and grow profitably.
