Interest Rate (%)
Number (Percentage format, 2 decimal places)

This calculates monthly interest based on the annual rate.

Automated New Balance: =PreviousBalance - PrincipalPortion

Conditional Formatting
To enhance visual clarity and highlight key data:
Overdue Payments: Apply red fill to any row in the Payment Log where Date Paid is later than today (using formula: =AND(DatePaid < TODAY(), Status="Active")).
Highest Interest Rates: Highlight rows with interest rates above 15% using conditional formatting with a red gradient.
Paid-Off Debts: Set background color to green for any debt where Status = "Paid Off".
Payment Target vs. Minimum: Use yellow highlight when Payment Target is less than the Minimum Payment Due (risk of default).
User Instructions
Open the template and save it with a unique name (e.g., “MyDebtBudget_2024.xlsx”).
Add each debt in the Debt Details sheet using the provided columns. Ensure Interest Rate is entered as a percentage (e.g., 18.5%, not 18.5).
In the Payment Log, record every payment made, including date and amount. The system will auto-calculate interest and principal.
Update the Current Balance in Debt Details monthly, or after each payment batch.
Use the Process Documentation Notes sheet to log decisions like debt consolidation plans, negotiation attempts, or strategy changes (e.g., “Switched to avalanche method in Feb 2024”).
The Debt Overview sheet dynamically updates based on data input—check it weekly for progress.
Always back up the file before major edits.
