    Table Structures and Columns

The core of the template resides in the Gantt Chart sheet, which features a structured table with the following columns:

    <<<<<<<<
    Column Name Data Type Description
Task IDNumber (Integer)A unique identifier for each research task (e.g., 1, 2, 3…)
Task NameTextName of the activity (e.g., “Literature Review: Quantum Computing”)
CategoryText (Dropdown)Type: Literature, Data Collection, Analysis, Writing, Peer Review, Submission
Start DateDateThe planned start date of the task using Excel’s date format.
End DateDateThe planned end date. Must be equal to or after Start Date.
    Duration (Days)Number (Calculated)=End Date - Start Date + 1
StatusText (Dropdown: Not Started, In Progress, Completed, On Hold)User-selectable to reflect progress.
PriorityText (Dropdown: High, Medium, Low)Helps identify critical path tasks.
NotesMemo/TextDescription of resources needed, references, or obstacles.

The Milestones Tracker sheet contains: Milestone Name (Text), Target Date (Date), Achieved? (Yes/No), and Notes. This allows users to track overarching goals like “Complete Draft” or “Submit to Journal.” The Status Dashboard pulls data via formulas and displays progress percentages, overdue tasks, and completion trends.

    Formulas Required

    • =End Date - Start Date + 1: Calculates duration in days.
    • =IF(TODAY()>[End Date], IF([Status]="Completed", "On Time", "Overdue"), IF([Start Date]>TODAY(), "Not Started", "In Progress")): Auto-detects task status relative to today’s date.
    • =COUNTIFS(Status, "Completed")/COUNTA(TaskID): Computes overall project completion percentage in the Dashboard.
    • =SUMPRODUCT((Category="Writing")*(Status="Completed")): Counts completed writing tasks for category breakdowns.

    Conditional Formatting

    • Tasks that are “Overdue” and “Not Completed” turn red.
    • “High Priority” tasks have a yellow background for visibility.
    • Gantt bars (created using bar charts from duration values) are color-coded by category: blue for literature, green for data, orange for writing, purple for review.
    • Cells in the Dashboard turn green when overall progress exceeds 70%, amber between 40-69%, and red below 40%.

    • Bar Chart (Stacked): Visual timeline matching the Gantt bars but with color-coded status segments.
    • Line Graph: Tracks weekly progress over time, calculated from completed tasks per week.

All charts dynamically update as users modify the Gantt table. This makes tracking long-term research projects intuitive and visually rewarding—essential for maintaining motivation during extended personal research endeavors.

This Personal Use Research Management Gantt Chart template is not merely a tool—it’s an organizational philosophy. It turns abstract, overwhelming research goals into tangible, actionable steps with clear timelines. Whether you’re writing a thesis, preparing a grant proposal, or exploring independent scholarship, this Excel-based system ensures your intellectual work remains structured, visible, and on track.
