One-Page Excel Template for Startup Planning: Chore Chart

This comprehensive one-page Excel template is specifically designed to support early-stage startups in organizing and tracking essential operational tasks through a streamlined, visual chore chart system. By integrating the concept of a chore chart—commonly used for household task management—with the rigor required in startup planning, this template enables founders, small teams, or solo entrepreneurs to maintain accountability, prioritize critical activities, and monitor progress all within a single Excel sheet.

Template Overview

The template is structured as a dynamic one-page dashboard that combines task tracking with performance analytics. Its primary purpose is to assist startups in maintaining operational discipline during the high-pressure development phase. Each chore represents a recurring or milestone-driven activity critical to startup success, such as customer outreach, product updates, financial review, and team coordination.

Sheet Name

StartupChoreChart

This is the only sheet in the workbook. It contains all data structures and interactive elements. The one-page design ensures minimal navigation complexity while delivering maximum functionality for startup teams that value clarity and efficiency.

Table Structure

The main body of the template features a single, well-organized table spanning rows 5 to 40 (with headers in row 4). The table is designed to accommodate up to 35 unique tasks with room for growth via dynamic expansion.

Columns and Data Types

Column Data Type Description
Task ID Numerical (Auto-increment) A unique identifier assigned automatically using a formula. Starts at 1 and increments by 1 for new rows.
Chore Title Text (String) The name of the task (e.g., "Weekly Team Sync," "Update Investor Deck").
Type Dropdown List (Manual Entry or Validation) Categorizes tasks into: Operational, Marketing, Product, Finance, Legal, or Administrative. Helps in filtering and reporting.
Frequency Dropdown (Daily / Weekly / Bi-weekly / Monthly / One-Time) Indicates how often the task is performed. Used for scheduling and automated reminders.
Last Completed Date (mm/dd/yyyy) Records the last date the task was finished.
Next Due Date Date (Formula-driven) Dynamically calculates the next due date based on frequency. For example, if "Weekly" and last completed on 05/10/2024, next due is 05/17/2024.
Status Dropdown (Not Started / In Progress / Completed / Overdue) Tracks the real-time status of each chore for quick visual assessment.

Formulas Required

  • Last Completed Date: User enters manually. No formula required.
  • Next Due Date (Cell E5):
    =IF(D5="Daily", TODAY()+1, IF(D5="Weekly", TODAY()+7, IF(D5="Bi-weekly", TODAY()+14, IF(D5="Monthly", EDATE(TODAY(),1), ""))))
    This formula adjusts based on frequency. For "One-Time" tasks, the user may leave it blank or mark completion.
  • Task ID (Cell A5):
    =IF(ROW()-4=1, 1, IF(A4="", "", A4+1))
    This ensures auto-incrementing Task IDs as new rows are added.
  • Status Color Logic: Conditional formatting rules use formulas to apply color codes based on status (see below).

Conditional Formatting Rules

The template includes three key conditional formatting rules applied to the entire "Status" column (F5:F40):

  1. Overdue: If today’s date is past the next due date, highlight in red with white text.
    Formula: =AND(F5="In Progress", TODAY()>E5)
  2. In Progress: Highlight in yellow for tasks currently being worked on.
  3. Completed: Highlight in green to indicate success.

User Instructions

To use the template effectively:

  1. Open the Excel file and navigate to the "StartupChoreChart" sheet.
  2. Enter chore titles in column B and select their type from the dropdown in column C.
  3. Select frequency (Daily, Weekly, etc.) in column D.
  4. Manually enter the date you last completed a task in column E.
  5. The "Next Due Date" will auto-update based on your selection and current date.
  6. Update the status regularly—use "Not Started," "In Progress," or "Completed."
  7. If a chore is overdue, the cell will turn red automatically to draw attention.
  8. To add a new task, simply type into row 41 (the table expands dynamically).

Example Rows

Task ID Chore Title Type Frequency Last Completed Next Due Date Status (Example)
1 Draft Monthly Revenue Report Finance Monthly 04/30/2024 05/31/2024 In Progress (highlighted yellow)
5 Email 10 Prospective Clients Marketing Weekly 05/08/2024 05/15/2024 Completed (highlighted green)

Recommended Charts and Dashboards

Although the template is one-page, it supports two small visualizations for enhanced planning:

  • Status Distribution Chart (Pie Chart): Place in cell J5. Use data from status counts (Not Started, In Progress, Completed, Overdue). Helps visualize workload balance.
  • Upcoming Due Dates Bar Chart (Horizontal): Insert a bar chart from column E to show tasks due within the next 7 days. Great for weekly planning.

This Excel template brings the simplicity of a chore chart to startup planning, enabling founders to stay organized, focused, and responsive—all on one clean page. Designed with scalability in mind, it supports both solo founders and small teams aiming to build momentum through systematic task execution.
