The urban landscape of Tehran has undergone rapid and often unplanned transformation over the past few decades. Located at the foot of the Alborz mountain range and situated near several major seismic fault lines, Tehran presents a multifaceted risk profile that extends beyond traditional fire hazards to include earthquakes, industrial accidents, and traffic-related incidents. Within this high-risk environment, the firefighter serves as a pivotal component of public safety infrastructure in Iran. The profession has evolved from basic firefighting duties to encompass complex rescue operations hazardous material handling and disaster management coordination.

The establishment of the Tehran Fire Department in 1959 marked a significant milestone in urban service delivery. However, given the exponential population growth that transformed Tehran into a megacity with over nine million residents, existing systems have faced unprecedented pressure. This article aims to provide a comprehensive academic analysis of the current state of firefighting services in Iran’s capital, highlighting specific challenges and offering evidence-based recommendations for improvement.

Future research should focus on longitudinal studies assessing the impact of policy changes on response times and disaster outcomes. It is imperative that policymakers in Iran prioritize investment in urban safety infrastructure to protect one of the most vital cities in the region. The modernization of firefighting services is not merely a technical upgrade but a moral obligation to ensure public safety and resilience against future uncertainties.
