The Republic of Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire) possesses one of the most dynamic coastlines in West Africa, characterized by a complex interplay of sandy barriers, lagoons, and offshore islands. At the heart of this geographical complexity lies Abidjan, an economic powerhouse and urban hub situated along the Gulf of Guinea. The stability of Abidjan’s infrastructure, economy, and population is intrinsically linked to the health of its marine environment. However, the city faces existential threats from coastal erosion, flooding, and pollution. In this context, the role of a professional oceanographer transcends traditional academic boundaries; it becomes a fundamental pillar of national security and urban sustainability.

The objective of this article is to delineate the multifaceted responsibilities of an oceanographer working in Abidjan.
