Abstract

This study examines the rapid maturation of User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design sectors within Morocco, with a specific focus on Casablanca as the nation's economic capital. As Morocco accelerates its digital transformation under strategies such as "Maroc Digital 2025," the demand for culturally responsive and functionally robust digital products has surged. However, many international design frameworks fail to account for local linguistic nuances, mobile-first behaviors, and varying levels of digital literacy prevalent in the region. This paper analyzes current UX/UI practices among designers in Casablanca, highlighting the unique challenges of designing for a bilingual (Arabic/French) and increasingly multilingual population. Through qualitative interviews with twelve senior designers and quantitative analysis of user testing data from local fintech applications, this article argues that successful UI implementation in Casablanca requires a hybrid approach that merges global design standards with deep sociocultural empathy. The findings suggest that while technical skills are abundant, there remains a critical gap in strategic UX research methodologies tailored to the North African context.

The global digital economy is increasingly driven by intuitive design and seamless user experiences. In North Africa, Morocco stands out as a burgeoning hub for technology and innovation. At the heart of this transformation lies Casablanca, a city that serves not only as the economic engine of Morocco but also as the primary center for creative industries and tech startups in West Africa. For decades, digital products deployed in Moroccan markets were largely adaptations of European or American templates, often resulting in poor user adoption rates due to cultural misalignment.

The role of the UX UI Designer has thus evolved from a purely aesthetic function to a critical strategic role. A proficient UX UI Designer must navigate the complex interplay between visual hierarchy, interaction design, and local user behavior. In Casablanca, this complexity is heightened by the city's unique demographic fabric. The population exhibits high mobile penetration yet varies significantly in digital literacy. Furthermore, the linguistic landscape is diverse; while French remains a lingua franca for business and technology interfaces, Arabic (both Modern Standard Arabic and Moroccan Darija) dominates daily communication. This paper explores how UX/UI designers in Casablanca are adapting global best practices to meet these specific local demands.

Casablanca is undergoing a rapid digital transformation, fueled by government initiatives and private sector investment. The emergence of "Silicon City" (Casanearshore) has attracted international tech companies alongside local startups. Consequently, the demand for high-quality digital interfaces has skyrocketed. However, the talent pool for specialized UX/UI roles is still developing.

Historically, design education in Morocco focused heavily on graphic arts and visual communication rather than interaction design or user psychology. As a result, many early practitioners entered the field with strong UI skills but limited understanding of User Experience (UX) research methodologies. This gap has begun to close in recent years, with universities such as ENSIAS (École Nationale Supérieure d'Informatique et d'Analyse des Systèmes) and private institutions integrating UX curricula into their programs. Nevertheless, the practical application of these skills in the Casablanca market presents unique challenges.

To understand the current state of UX/UI design in Casablanca, this study employed a mixed-methods approach. First, semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve senior UX/UI designers working in major tech hubs across Casablanca. These professionals represented a mix of local startups, multinational corporations operating in Morocco (such as Microsoft and Orange), and creative agencies.

Secondly, a user testing study was conducted on three popular fintech applications launched in the Moroccan market. The participants were 50 residents of Casablanca, aged between 18 and 45, representing diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. The study measured task completion rates, error rates, and subjective satisfaction scores (SUS - System Usability Scale) to evaluate the effectiveness of current design choices.

A. Linguistic Adaptation in UI

A primary finding is the critical importance of language in interface design. In Casablanca, users expect interfaces that support seamless switching between Arabic and French. However, most international design systems are optimized for Left-to-Right (LTR) languages like English and French. Implementing Right-to-Left (RTL) layouts for Arabic often results in broken alignments if not handled with specialized UI frameworks.

The interviews revealed that UX UI Designers in Casablanca spend significant time creating "RTL-safe" components. One designer noted, "It is not just about translating text. It is about mirroring the entire spatial logic of the application. Icons must flip, navigation bars must shift from left to right, and progress indicators must reverse direction." This requires a deep understanding of both Arabic typography and CSS/Design system architecture.

B. Trust and Visual Credibility

The user testing data indicated that users in Casablanca place a higher premium on visual cues of trust compared to their European counterparts. In the context of fintech, where financial security is paramount, excessive minimalism—a trend popular in Silicon Valley—was often perceived as "empty" or "suspicious." Users preferred interfaces that provided abundant information, clear contact details, and visible security badges.

This suggests that the global trend toward ultra-minimalist UI may not be universally applicable. In Casablanca, a moderate level of visual density can enhance perceived reliability. The UX UI Designer must therefore balance aesthetic modernity with cultural expectations of transparency and security.

The data suggests that while technical proficiency in tools like Figma and Adobe XD is widespread among designers in Casablanca, strategic UX thinking is still maturing. Many designers focus on the "look and feel" rather than the user journey or problem definition. There is a noticeable lack of localized user research; instead of conducting interviews with Moroccan users, some companies rely on data from other markets.

This disconnect leads to friction in product adoption. For instance, forms that require extensive personal information without clear explanations of data usage are abandoned at high rates due to privacy concerns common in the region. Furthermore, the reliance on high-bandwidth assets (high-resolution images and complex animations) can hinder performance for users with slower internet connections, a reality for many in lower-income districts of Casablanca.

To address these issues, UX UI Designers must adopt a more inclusive design philosophy. This includes optimizing for mobile-first experiences on mid-range devices, utilizing progressive enhancement techniques to ensure functionality across varying network speeds, and conducting rigorous local user testing. The integration of "Darija" (Moroccan dialect) in micro-copy—such as error messages or onboarding tips—was shown to significantly increase user engagement and comprehension during our study.

The landscape of UX/UI design in Morocco is dynamic and evolving. Casablanca, as the epicenter of this change, offers a fertile ground for innovation but also presents distinct challenges related to language, cultural expectations, and infrastructure. The successful UX UI Designer operating in this region must be more than a visual designer; they must be a cultural translator.

This article argues that the future of digital products in Casablanca lies in "Glocal" design—applying global best practices while deeply rooting them in local context. This involves mastering RTL layouts, respecting cultural nuances regarding trust and information density, and prioritizing accessibility for diverse user groups. As Morocco continues to position itself as a leading digital hub for Africa, the role of the UX UI Designer will become increasingly strategic. Organizations that invest in localized user research and culturally empathetic design will gain a significant competitive advantage in the emerging Moroccan market.

Future research should focus on longitudinal studies of how AI-driven personalization affects user trust in Moroccan markets and how emerging technologies like voice interfaces can bridge literacy gaps through Arabic dialect recognition.
