We investigate how local artisans adapt global automotive technologies to local constraints, often lacking standardized diagnostic equipment or access to original manufacturer parts. By highlighting these dynamics we provide a comprehensive overview of how technical labor sustains urban functionality in developing metropolitan contexts.

This study employs a mixed-methods approach combining ethnographic observation and semi-structured interviews conducted across five major workshop clusters in Nepal Kathmandu, including areas such as Teku Bhaisiyan and Koteshwor. Data was collected from seventy-two active mechanics ranging from apprentices to master technicians. The focus was placed on their daily workflows challenges faced regarding part availability and the impact of regulatory changes on their livelihoods.

In Nepal Kathmandu the mechanic operates within a intricate informal economy that bridges rural supply chains with urban demand. Many mechanics source components from India through porous borders or via local distributors in Sundarijal industrial area. This reliance on imported parts creates vulnerabilities, particularly during geopolitical tensions or border closures which frequently disrupt the flow of essential spare parts.

Furthermore the mechanic provides employment for numerous youths who lack formal higher education qualifications. In a city where unemployment among graduates remains high those without degrees often find viable livelihoods through vocational work in auto repair shops. Thus preserving and professionalizing this sector is crucial for social stability in Nepal Kathmandu.

A significant portion of vehicles operating in Nepal Kathmandu are older models with carburetor engines rather than modern fuel-injected systems. While this simplifies some mechanical repairs it complicates others due to the scarcity of genuine parts for discontinued models mechanics frequently engage in improvisation or "jugaad," modifying components to fit incompatible vehicles. This practice ensures vehicle longevity but raises concerns about road safety and emissions control.

Additionally environmental pollution levels in Nepal Kathmandu are among the highest globally partly due to poorly maintained engines emitting excessive smoke. Many mechanics lack access to emission testing facilities or tuning equipment that could optimize fuel efficiency and reduce harmful output. Consequently there is an urgent need for technical upgrades aimed at reducing urban air toxicity.

The government of Nepal has introduced various regulations intended to improve vehicle safety including mandatory fitness certificates and periodic inspections however enforcement remains inconsistent especially within densely populated neighborhoods of Nepal Kathmandu. Mechanics often find themselves caught between client expectations for low-cost repairs and legal requirements for thorough diagnostics.

Moreover occupational health risks pose another challenge many mechanics work without protective gear exposure to toxic chemicals heavy metals and noise pollution leading long term health issues such as respiratory diseases hearing loss etc Addressing these labor rights issues requires policy intervention alongside technological education initiatives specific to the context of Nepal Kathmandu.
