Project Title: Evaluating User Experience and Interface Design for Digital Services in Qatar Doha

Role: UX UI Designer

Location: Doha, Qatar

Version: 1.0

Date: October 2023

This Experiment Protocol outlines the methodology for a user research study focused on the interaction between local users in Qatar Doha and digital interfaces designed by a UX UI Designer. As Qatar accelerates its digital transformation under the Qatar National Vision 2030, the demand for intuitive, culturally relevant digital experiences has surged. This experiment aims to bridge the gap between global design standards and local user expectations.

The primary objective is to assess how specific UX UI Designer decisions—such as layout hierarchy, color psychology, iconography, and navigation patterns—impact usability and user satisfaction among residents and citizens in Doha. The study will specifically investigate the effectiveness of bilingual (Arabic/English) interfaces and the cultural appropriateness of visual assets.

The core goals of this experiment are:

  1. To evaluate the usability of a prototype mobile application designed for the Doha market.
  2. To determine the impact of Right-to-Left (RTL) layout adaptation on user task completion rates.
  3. To gather qualitative feedback on the aesthetic appeal and cultural resonance of the UI elements.
  4. To identify friction points in the user journey that are specific to the local context of Qatar Doha.

The study will recruit 20 participants residing in Doha, Qatar. To ensure a representative sample, the cohort will be divided into two groups:

  • Group A (Local Citizens): 10 participants who are Qatari nationals, primarily Arabic-speaking, with varying levels of English proficiency.
  • Group B (Expatriate Residents): 10 participants who are long-term residents in Doha, primarily English-speaking, with varying levels of Arabic proficiency.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Age between 18 and 45.
  • Regular users of smartphones and digital banking or e-commerce services.
  • Residing in Doha for at least six months.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Professionals working in UX/UI design or software development (to avoid expert bias).

This experiment will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining moderated usability testing with post-task surveys. The UX UI Designer will observe sessions to capture real-time reactions.

4.1. Environment

The testing will be conducted in a quiet, climate-controlled room in a co-working space in West Bay, Doha, to ensure comfort and minimize distractions. Alternatively, remote sessions via Zoom will be offered for participants who prefer privacy, ensuring high-quality screen sharing.

4.2. Materials

  • Prototype: A high-fidelity interactive prototype of a lifestyle service app (e.g., booking local events or services).
  • Task Scenarios: Five specific tasks, such as "Book a ticket for a cultural event in Souq Waqif" or "Change the app language to Arabic."
  • Survey Instrument: System Usability Scale (SUS) and a custom cultural relevance questionnaire.

Each session will last approximately 45 minutes and follow this structure:

  1. Introduction (5 mins): The UX UI Designer will welcome the participant, explain the purpose of the study, and obtain informed consent. Emphasis will be placed on the fact that the user is being tested, not the interface.
  2. Demographic Survey (5 mins): Collection of basic data regarding age, nationality, and digital literacy.
  3. Usability Tasks (25 mins): Participants will perform the five tasks using the prototype. The designer will employ the "Think Aloud" protocol, asking participants to verbalize their thoughts, confusion, and expectations as they navigate. Special attention will be paid to how users handle RTL switching and Arabic typography.
  4. Post-Test Interview (10 mins): A semi-structured interview to discuss overall impressions, cultural appropriateness of images and colors, and suggestions for improvement.

Data will be analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods:

  • Quantitative: Task success rates, time on task, and SUS scores will be calculated. Comparisons will be made between Group A and Group B to identify cultural or linguistic barriers.
  • Qualitative: Session recordings and notes will be coded for recurring themes, such as "confusion with icons," "preference for specific color schemes," or "trust issues with payment flows."

This experiment adheres to strict ethical guidelines. All participants will sign a consent form detailing their rights, including the right to withdraw at any time. Data will be anonymized and stored securely in compliance with Qatar’s data protection regulations. No personally identifiable information will be shared with third parties.

The UX UI Designer expects to produce a comprehensive report detailing:

  • Specific design recommendations for optimizing interfaces for the Qatari market.
  • Guidelines for effective bilingual design in Doha.
  • A prioritized list of usability issues to be addressed in the next design iteration.

This protocol ensures that the resulting digital product is not only functional but also culturally respectful and highly usable for the diverse population of Qatar Doha.
