Project Title: Cross-Cultural Interface Adaptation for the Saint Petersburg Market

Location: Saint Petersburg, Russia

Role: UX/UI Designer

Version: 1.0

Date: October 2023

This Experiment Protocol outlines the methodology for a user experience research study conducted by a UX/UI Designer targeting the digital landscape of Saint Petersburg, Russia. As one of Russia's most culturally rich and technologically advanced cities, Saint Petersburg presents a unique environment for testing digital products. The local user base is characterized by high digital literacy, a strong appreciation for aesthetic minimalism, and specific cultural expectations regarding trust and information density.

The primary objective of this experiment is to evaluate the usability and visual appeal of a newly developed fintech mobile application prototype. The study aims to determine if the current UI design aligns with the local preferences of Saint Petersburg residents, ensuring that the UX flow minimizes friction and maximizes user trust.

The UX/UI Designer has established the following specific objectives for this experiment:

  • Usability Assessment: To identify pain points in the user journey, specifically during the onboarding and transaction processes.
  • Cultural Relevance: To verify if the iconography, color palette, and micro-copy resonate with the cultural context of Saint Petersburg.
  • Performance Metrics: To measure task completion rates and time-on-task compared to industry benchmarks in the Russian market.
  • Accessibility: To ensure the interface meets accessibility standards relevant to the local demographic.

This study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining moderated usability testing with quantitative surveys. The experiment will be conducted in-person at a co-working space in the Central District of Saint Petersburg to allow the UX/UI Designer to observe non-verbal cues and environmental factors.

3.1 Participants

We will recruit 15 participants aged 25–45, residing in Saint Petersburg. The sample will be balanced by gender and occupation. Participants must be fluent in Russian and have prior experience using mobile banking or fintech applications.

Criteria Requirement
Location Resident of Saint Petersburg
Language Native Russian speaker
Tech Proficiency Intermediate to Advanced
Device Must bring personal smartphone (iOS or Android)

3.2 Procedure

The session will last approximately 60 minutes per participant. The UX/UI Designer will guide the participant through the following stages:

  1. Consent and Introduction (5 mins): Explanation of the study goals and signing of the informed consent form.
  2. Pre-Task Survey (10 mins): Gathering demographic data and assessing current attitudes towards digital finance in Russia.
  3. Usability Tasks (30 mins): Participants will perform specific tasks (e.g., "Transfer money to a friend," "View transaction history") while thinking aloud. The UX/UI Designer will observe interactions without interfering.
  4. Post-Task Interview (10 mins): Semi-structured interview to gather qualitative feedback on the UI aesthetics and overall experience.
  5. Debrief (5 mins): Answering participant questions and providing compensation.

The following tools will be utilized by the UX/UI Designer to facilitate the experiment:

  • Prototype: High-fidelity interactive prototype built in Figma.
  • Recording Software: OBS Studio for screen and video recording.
  • Analytics: Hotjar for heatmaps and session replays.
  • Survey Tool: Yandex Forms for data collection.

Adherence to ethical standards is paramount. All participants will provide informed consent before the study begins. Data collected will be anonymized and stored securely in compliance with Russian Federation Federal Law No. 152-FZ "On Personal Data." Participants will be informed of their right to withdraw from the study at any time without penalty.

Upon completion of the sessions, the UX/UI Designer will analyze the data using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative data, such as task success rates and time-on-task, will be analyzed using statistical software. Qualitative data from interviews and think-aloud protocols will be coded to identify recurring themes and usability issues.

Special attention will be paid to cultural nuances specific to Saint Petersburg. For example, feedback regarding the tone of voice in the UI copy will be evaluated to ensure it strikes the right balance between professionalism and approachability, which is highly valued in this region.

The expected outcomes of this experiment include a comprehensive report detailing usability issues, design recommendations, and insights into user preferences in Saint Petersburg. The findings will inform the next iteration of the UI design, ensuring that the final product is not only functional but also culturally attuned to its target audience.
