This Experiment Protocol outlines the standardized procedures for evaluating the mechanical and metallurgical properties of Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) joints on AISI 304 stainless steel. The primary objective is to assess the performance of the Welder and the resulting weld integrity under the specific environmental conditions prevalent in Turkey Ankara.

Ankara, the capital of Turkey, presents a unique testing environment characterized by a continental climate with significant temperature fluctuations, low humidity during winter, and high dust particulate matter during spring and summer. These factors can influence arc stability, shielding gas coverage, and the cooling rate of the weld pool. This protocol aims to quantify these effects to ensure that welding standards compliant with TS EN ISO 15614-1 are maintained within the Ankara industrial sector.

This protocol applies to all welding operations conducted at the designated testing facility in the Çankaya district of Ankara. It covers the preparation of base materials, the execution of the welding process by certified personnel, and the subsequent non-destructive testing (NDT) and destructive testing (DT) of the specimens. The scope is limited to butt joints in the flat position (1G).

The following materials and equipment must be sourced and verified prior to the commencement of the experiment:

  • Base Material: AISI 304 Stainless Steel plates, 6mm thickness, conforming to TS EN 10088-2.
  • Filler Material: ER308L welding wire, 2.4mm diameter.
  • Shielding Gas: Argon (99.996% purity), sourced from local Ankara suppliers.
  • Welding Machine: Inverter-based GTAW power source with pulse capability.
  • Environmental Monitoring: Digital anemometer, hygrometer, and thermometer to record Ankara-specific ambient conditions.

Given the location in Turkey Ankara, specific environmental controls are mandatory. The high altitude of Ankara (approximately 938 meters above sea level) affects the density of the shielding gas. Additionally, the dry, dusty air common in the region can compromise weld quality if not managed.

Before each welding run, the operator must record the ambient temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed. If the wind speed exceeds 2 m/s, a wind shield must be erected around the welding zone to prevent turbulence in the argon shield, which is critical for preventing porosity.

5.1. Preparation

The base metal plates shall be cut to dimensions of 150mm x 100mm. The edges must be beveled to a 30-degree angle with a 2mm root face. All surfaces must be cleaned using acetone to remove oils, grease, and dust particles typical of the Ankara industrial environment.

5.2. Welding Parameters

The Welder shall adhere to the following parameters. Any deviation must be documented and justified.

Parameter Value
Current Type DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative)
Amperage 110 - 120 A
Voltage 12 - 14 V
Travel Speed 250 - 300 mm/min
Gas Flow Rate 12 - 15 L/min (Adjusted for Ankara altitude)
Electrode 2.4mm Thoriated Tungsten

5.3. Execution

The Welder will perform three distinct passes: a root pass, a fill pass, and a cap pass. Between passes, the weld zone must be cleaned using a stainless steel wire brush to remove oxidation. The operator must maintain a consistent arc length and travel speed to ensure uniform bead geometry.

Upon completion of the welding process, the specimens will undergo the following tests in accordance with international standards adapted for local use:

  1. Visual Inspection (VT): Per TS EN ISO 17637. Check for cracks, porosity, undercut, and spatter.
  2. Penetrant Testing (PT): Per TS EN ISO 3452-1. To detect surface-breaking defects.
  3. Macro-Etching: Cross-sections will be prepared and etched with ferric chloride to evaluate penetration depth and fusion characteristics.
  4. Tensile Testing: Per TS EN ISO 6892-1. To determine the ultimate tensile strength of the weld joint.

All personnel must adhere to the Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331 of Turkey. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including welding helmets with auto-darkening filters, leather gloves, and flame-resistant clothing is mandatory. Adequate ventilation must be provided to remove welding fumes, which is particularly important in enclosed testing facilities in Ankara.

All data, including welding parameters, environmental readings, and test results, must be recorded in the official logbook. A final report will be generated, analyzing the correlation between Ankara's environmental conditions and the weld quality. This report will serve as a reference for future welding projects in the region.
