The primary goals of this internship were multifaceted. Firstly, it aimed to provide hands-on experience with high-precision analytical instruments such as Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Secondly, the role required the intern to assist senior Chemist staff in monitoring production lines for quality control deviations. Thirdly, understanding the legal framework governing chemical handling in Kuwait City, including regulations set by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, was a critical learning outcome. Finally, improving professional communication and teamwork within a multicultural workforce was an overarching soft-skill objective.

The internship took place at a prominent manufacturing facility situated in the heart of industrial activities in Kuwait City. This facility specializes in the production of specialty chemicals used in water treatment and construction materials, sectors that are booming due to urban development projects across Kuwait City. The location is strategic, allowing for efficient logistics while maintaining strict environmental controls. Working in this environment provided unique insights into how temperature fluctuations and humidity common to the region impact chemical stability and storage requirements. The facility adheres to ISO 9001 quality management standards, ensuring that every procedure performed by the intern met international benchmarks.

As an intern acting in the capacity of a junior Chemist, my daily routine involved a combination of laboratory analysis, data recording, and safety inspections. The specific duties included:

• Sampling and Analysis: Collecting raw material samples from incoming shipments and finished products from the production line. I performed titrations, pH measurements, and viscosity tests to ensure compliance with specification sheets.

• Safety Compliance:: Participating in daily toolbox talks and Hazard Identification (HAZID) meetings. Learning to handle hazardous waste according to Kuwait’s environmental protection laws was a crucial component of the training.

The period spent as a Chemist intern significantly enhanced my technical proficiency. I gained competence in interpreting chromatograms and identifying impurities in complex mixtures. Furthermore, I learned to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, such as leaks in HPLC systems or detector failures, which saved significant downtime for the team. Understanding the chemical behavior of substances under high-temperature conditions, typical of Kuwait City summers, was particularly valuable. I assisted in modifying storage protocols for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to prevent evaporation and pressure buildup.
