The Republic of Iraq possesses one of the most geologically diverse landscapes in the Middle East. Situated between two major tectonic plates—the Arabian Plate to the southwest and a branch of the Eurasian Plate to the northeast—Iraq’s geological history is marked by significant mountain-building events, particularly during the Zagros Orogeny. For any Geologist seeking to understand petroleum systems and sedimentary basin evolution, this region offers an unparalleled natural laboratory.
This Internship Report highlights my experience working with the Iraq Geological Survey organization. The choice of Baghdad as the focal point for this training was strategic. As the capital, Baghdad sits atop a complex alluvial plain formed by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, overlaying ancient sedimentary basins rich in oil and gas reserves. However, beneath these modern alluvial deposits lie exposed outcrops of older geological formations that provide critical clues to the region's paleoenvironmental history. The internship aimed to familiarize me with the specific challenges of conducting geological fieldwork in an urbanizing environment while contributing to the broader understanding of Iraq’s subsurface geology.
The specific goals assigned to me during this tenure included:
- To conduct detailed lithological logging of core samples retrieved from exploration wells in the Baghdad metropolitan area.
- To perform field mapping of exposed Eocene and Miocene formations surrounding the outskirts of Baghdad.
- To analyze the geochemical properties of soil samples to assess potential environmental hazards related to heavy metal contamination, a growing concern in industrial zones near Baghdad.
- To assist in the preparation of geological maps that integrate remote sensing data with ground-truth observations.
The geology of Iraq can be broadly divided into several geomorphological regions, including the Desert Platform, the Foothills Zone, and the Zagros Folded Belt. The area surrounding Baghdad lies primarily on the Western Desert Platform. This platform is characterized by thick sequences of Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks. The primary rock units encountered in this region include limestone, dolomite, shale, sandstone, and gypsum.
In the immediate vicinity of Baghdad, the Quaternary alluvial deposits are dominant. These unconsolidated sediments consist of clay, silt, sand, and gravel deposited by the Tigris River over millennia. However; to find exposed bedrock suitable for field study one must travel to the western outcrops near Fallujah or southern exposures near Kut. During this internship, I focused heavily on interpreting subsurface data from Baghdad wells because surface exposure is limited in the capital city itself.
Data Acquisition:
The primary tool for my work was the analysis of core logs provided by local petroleum companies operating in the Baghdad basin. I utilized Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to overlay these subsurface data points with surface geological maps. This integration allowed us to visualize the dip and strike of underground layers, which is crucial for determining trap structures for hydrocarbons.
Sampling and Analysis:
I participated in soil sampling campaigns along the banks of the Tigris within Baghdad. These samples were analyzed for grain size distribution and mineral composition. The methodology involved sieving techniques to determine particle size distribution, which is vital for understanding sediment transport mechanisms in riverine environments. Additionally, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) was used to identify clay mineralogy, providing insights into the diagenetic processes occurring within the subsurface reservoirs.
Structural Geology Studies:
A significant portion of the internship involved studying structural features. We examined fault planes and fold axes in outcrops outside central Baghdad. Understanding these structures is critical for a Geologist because they often control fluid migration pathways in oil and gas reservoirs.
The analysis conducted during this Internship yielded several important observations:
- Sedimentary Facies Changes: We identified distinct facies changes in the subsurface layers beneath Baghdad, transitioning from shallow marine carbonates to deeper marine shales. This suggests a complex transgressive-regressive cycle during the Cretaceous period.
- Petroleum Potential: The organic richness of certain shale intervals identified in Baghdad wells confirms their role as effective source rocks for the hydrocarbon systems in central Iraq.
- Environmental Concerns: Soil analysis revealed elevated levels of heavy metals, particularly chromium and lead, near industrial zones. This data is crucial for urban planning and environmental remediation efforts in Baghdad.
Career development as a Geologist in this region comes with unique challenges. First, the security situation historically posed risks to field teams, although conditions have stabilized significantly during my tenure. Second, the high summer temperatures in Iraq and Baghdad made prolonged outdoor fieldwork physically demanding, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols and hydration schedules. Finally, data accessibility was occasionally hindered by bureaucratic procedures regarding sensitive subsurface data.
This internship has been an invaluable experience in my professional development as a Geologist specializing in the geology of Iraq, Baghdad. It provided me with hands-on experience in core logging, structural analysis, and environmental sampling. The insights gained regarding the stratigraphy and structural geology of central Iraq have deepened my appreciation for the region's vast natural resources.
The integration of traditional field methods with modern GIS technology proved essential in overcoming the limitations of limited surface exposure in Baghdad. Moving forward, I intend to focus my career on reservoir characterization within Iraqi sedimentary basins, contributing to the sustainable management of Iraq’s hydrocarbon resources while also addressing environmental concerns associated with industrial activity.
