Department of Accounting and Finance
Date: October 2023 | Location: Ankara Convention Center, Turkey, Ankara Region

This academic poster presentation examines the critical role of the Auditor within the evolving economic framework of Turkey, with a specific focus on Ankara as its administrative and regulatory capital. As Turkey integrates further into global financial markets, the demand for high-quality auditing services has intensified. This study analyzes how auditors in Turkey, particularly those operating in Ankara, navigate the intersection between local Turkish Commercial Code (TCC) regulations and International Standards on Auditing (ISA). The presentation highlights the challenges faced by public interest entities and multinational corporations headquartered or operating within Turkey, Ankara's primary economic hub. By leveraging case studies from major financial institutions in central Turkey, we illustrate how rigorous audit practices contribute to market stability, investor confidence, and transparent corporate governance.

The concept of the Auditor has transcended its traditional role of mere financial verification to become a cornerstone of corporate integrity. In the context of Turkey, Ankara serves not only as the political capital but also as a burgeoning center for legal and financial consultancy. The presence of regulatory bodies such as the Capital Markets Board (SPK) and their regional branches in Turkey, Ankara necessitates a robust auditing profession.

This presentation explores two primary objectives:

  • To evaluate the impact of recent amendments to Turkish auditing legislation on local audit firms.
  • To assess the readiness of auditors in Turkey, specifically those based in Ankara, to adopt and implement global best practices without compromising local regulatory compliance.

The economic volatility experienced by emerging markets makes the function of the Auditor more vital than ever. In Turkey, where foreign direct investment is closely monitored, the credibility provided by a qualified audit opinion acts as a significant economic stabilizer.

This research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of audit quality metrics with qualitative interviews from key stakeholders in the financial sector. The study focuses exclusively on audit firms registered in Turkey, with a disproportionate sampling strategy targeting firms located in Turkey, Ankara.

  • Data Collection: Survey instruments were distributed to 200 senior auditors and partners across top-tier accounting networks operating in the capital region of Turkey, Ankara. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted with regulatory officials overseeing compliance in Turkey, Ankara.
  • Analytical Framework: Data was analyzed using regression models to determine the correlation between audit firm size and adherence to ISA standards within the Turkish context. Qualitative data was coded thematically to identify recurring challenges specific to operating as an Auditor in a transitional economy like Turkey.

The analysis reveals several critical insights regarding the modern Auditor in Turkey:

1. Regulatory Harmonization:

  • Auditors in Turkey are increasingly aligning with European Union directives, given the country's accession negotiations. However, significant gaps remain in practical implementation within smaller firms.
  • Firms based in Turkey,⬇️ Download as DOCX Edit online as DOCX
