Innovating for the Future of Urban Mobility in Latin AmericaPresented by: Senior Automotive Engineer TeamIn Association with Technical Institutes in Peru Lima | International Academic Symposium 2024
To address the specific challenges of Lima, we propose three pillars of automotive innovation:
1. Electric Vehicle (EV) Integration
Lima’s climate is ideal for electric vehicles. The moderate temperatures allow battery packs to operate within optimal thermal ranges, extending lifespan and efficiency compared to extreme hot or cold climates. Furthermore, the proximity to hydroelectric power in Peru offers a cleaner energy grid source.
2. Public Transit Optimization
The "Metropolitano" and upcoming subway lines require specialized engineering for maintenance and efficiency. We propose using telematics data to predict maintenance needs before failures occur, reducing downtime in high-traffic corridors.
3. Lightweight Material Applications
Road conditions in some parts of Lima can be uneven. Engineers are developing suspension systems and chassis materials that are durable enough for rough roads but lightweight enough to improve fuel economy or battery range.
Our research indicates that a transition to hybrid buses in the main corridors of Lima could reduce NOx emissions by 40% within five years. This analysis was conducted using simulation models calibrated with real-world traffic data from the Ministry of Transport.
