The Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) of Brazil is recognized globally as one of the most critical biodiversity hotspots, harboring an exceptional density of endemic species. This academic poster presents a comprehensive analysis conducted within the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, focusing on the fragmentation impacts caused rapid urbanization and infrastructure development on local mammalian and avian populations. As a dedicated Biologist, my research aims to bridge the gap between ecological theory and practical conservation policy in an increasingly dense urban environment. The study utilizes camera trap data, acoustic monitoring, and GIS mapping to assess species richness across three distinct habitat patches: Tijuca National Park, Serra dos Órgãos transitional zone, and fragmented riparian corridors in Baixada Fluminense. Our findings indicate a significant decline in large-mammal diversity due to edge effects but highlight the resilience of certain generalist species and the crucial role of green corridors for gene flow. This presentation offers evidence-based recommendations for urban planners and conservationists operating within Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, emphasizing that biodiversity preservation is not mutually exclusive with sustainable urban development.

Rio de Janeiro, the cultural and historical heart of coastal Brazil, represents a unique intersection where high biodiversity coexists with intense human pressure. Despite being covered by concrete and asphalt for much of its modern history, the region retains pockets of primary rainforest that serve as refuges for countless species. However, the remaining fragments are often isolated islands in a sea of urbanization. For any Biologist working in this context, understanding these dynamics is not merely an academic exercise but a moral and ecological imperative.

The primary objective of this research was to quantify the impact of habitat fragmentation on key indicator species. We hypothesized that smaller fragments isolated by major highways (such as the Rio–Niterói Bridge approach roads) would show lower genetic diversity and higher stress markers in wildlife populations compared to larger, contiguous forest areas like Tijuca National Park. This study specifically targets the Brazil, Rio de Janeiro ecosystem because it serves as a microcosm for tropical urban biodiversity challenges worldwide.

To ensure robust data collection, we employed a multi-faceted approach involving field ecology and advanced spatial analysis:

  • Survey Sites: Three primary sites were selected: (1) Tijuca National Park (approx. 3,952 hectares), representing a large protected area; (2) Parque Estadual da Serra dos Órgãos buffer zone, representing mid-sized fragments; and (3) Riparian forests along the Maricá River in Baixada Fluminense, representing highly fragmented corridors.
  • Data Collection: Over a twelve-month period from January to December 2022, we deployed 50 infrared camera traps at random intervals of 1km. Additionally, automated acoustic recorders were placed to monitor bird and amphibian vocalizations, providing data on species that are elusive or nocturnal.
  • Spatial Analysis: Using ArcGIS software, we mapped land-use changes over the last two decades. We calculated landscape metrics such as patch size, edge density, and connectivity indices to correlate physical fragmentation with biological outcomes.
  • Community Engagement: As part of our ethical framework and scientific dissemination strategy in Brazil, we conducted workshops with local schoolchildren and community leaders in Rio de Janeiro to promote environmental awareness. This participatory approach ensures that the data collected is contextualized within the social realities of the region.

The results reveal a complex picture of urban biodiversity resilience and vulnerability:

A. Mammalian Diversity

We identified 18 species of mammals, including the endangered Red-legged Seriema (which surprisingly thrives in edge habitats) and the ocelot. Large predators like the jaguar were absent from all sampled urban fragments, confirming that core areas remain essential for apex predators. However, mesopredators such as crab-eating foxes showed increased activity in peri-urban zones, suggesting potential disease transmission risks between wildlife and domestic animals.

B. Avian Communities

Acoustic data indicated a significant shift in bird composition. Native forest-dependent species, such as the Turquoise-fronted Applecrest, showed a 40% decline in smaller fragments compared to large parks. Conversely, invasive species like the House Sparrow and native generalists like the Black-capped Chickadee increased in abundance near human settlements.

C. Genetic Connectivity

GIS analysis demonstrated that riparian corridors along rivers are critical for maintaining genetic flow between isolated forest patches. In areas where these corridors were preserved, we observed higher species richness and lower signs of inbreeding depression in small mammal populations.

The findings underscore the critical need for integrated landscape planning in Rio de Janeiro. For a modern Biologist, the challenge is not just to document loss but to propose viable solutions. The data confirms that while urbanization fragments habitats, strategic preservation of green corridors can mitigate some negative effects.

In the context of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, where political and economic pressures often compete with conservation goals, these scientific findings provide a solid evidence base for advocacy. We argue that "green infrastructure" should be treated as essential public health infrastructure. The presence of biodiversity in urban areas correlates with improved mental health for residents and reduced urban heat island effects. Therefore, protecting the Atlantic Forest remnants is not solely an ecological concern but a socioeconomic one.

This poster presentation highlights that biodiversity in the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro is at a tipping point. While resilience exists, it cannot withstand further fragmentation without intervention.
