This academic poster presents a rigorous examination of the carpentry industry in Iran, with a specific geographic and cultural focus on Tehran. As the bustling capital and largest metropolis in Iran, Tehran serves as both an archive of traditional Persian woodworking techniques and a testing ground for modern industrial applications. This study analyzes the transition from historical carpenter workshops—such as those found in the Grand Bazaar—to contemporary factories supplying high-rise residential complexes. By integrating ethnographic fieldwork with material science analysis, we evaluate how local Iranian timber resources and international imports intersect within Tehran’s rapidly expanding urban landscape. The findings suggest that while mechanization threatens traditional artisanal skills, there is a growing resurgence in demand for bespoke carpentry rooted in Persian design aesthetics.

The craft of the carpenter is intrinsic to the architectural identity of Iran. From ancient palaces like Golestan to modern residential builds in North Tehran, wood has served as a primary structural and decorative element. However, the role of the carpenter in contemporary society is undergoing significant transformation.


This research focuses specifically on Tehran, a city characterized by dense population growth, seismic vulnerabilities, and a complex socio-economic fabric. Tehran represents a unique case study where traditional craftsmanship must compete with globalized construction methods. Understanding the dynamics of carpentry in this region is crucial for urban planners and heritage conservationists aiming to preserve the aesthetic integrity of Iranian cities while embracing sustainable development goals.


Our mixed-method approach involved:


  • Site Visits: Detailed observation of active carpentry workshops in the Tehran Grand Bazaar and industrial zones like Shahrak-e Gharb.

  • Semi-Structured Interviews: Conversations with over 40 master craftsmen (Ustad-Kar) and young apprentices in Iran regarding skill transmission and economic challenges.

  • Material Analysis: Testing the durability of locally sourced woods such as Fum (Poplar), Walnut, and Beech, commonly used by Tehran’s builders.

Our findings indicate a stark bifurcation in the carpentry sector in Iran.


A. Traditional Preservation

In historic districts, master carpenters continue to utilize intricate joinery techniques (Naghsh-o-Negar) that define Persian interior design. These artisans in Tehran are increasingly sought after for restoration projects of Qajar-era villas and mosques.


B. Modern Industrialization

Conversely, the majority of carpentry in new developments relies on MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) and particle board imported from neighboring countries due to the high cost of premium timber in Iran. This shift has led to a decline in structural woodworking skills among younger generations.

The decline of structural woodwork in Tehran poses risks for seismic resilience, as wooden frames have historically provided flexibility during earthquakes. Furthermore, the loss of artisanal knowledge disconnects modern Iranians from their cultural heritage.


However, there is a silver lining. A growing middle class in affluent areas of Tehran is beginning to value sustainability and bespoke design. This market trend offers an opportunity for carpenters to innovate by combining traditional aesthetics with eco-friendly materials, thereby revitalizing the trade.


The future of carpentry in Iran depends on balancing modernization with heritage preservation. Policies supporting vocational training in Tehran, coupled with incentives for using sustainable local timber, can ensure that the skill set remains viable. We advocate for stronger institutional support to document these techniques and integrate them into architectural curricula across Iranian universities.
