Understanding the stratigraphy of this region is not merely an academic exercise; it is imperative for infrastructure development, groundwater management, and sustainable mining policies. The city of Accra serves as a microcosm for the broader geological challenges facing West Africa, where economic growth must be balanced with environmental preservation and geological hazard mitigation.

2.0 Methodology

This study employs a multi-faceted approach combining field mapping, petrographic analysis, and remote sensing technologies.
  • Satellite Imagery: High-resolution multispectral imagery was utilized to identify structural lineaments in the Accra Plains that may indicate subsurface mineralization or fault zones.

The geological diversity of Ghana provides a unique laboratory for studying Precambrian tectonics. However, the specific context of Ghana Accra introduces anthropogenic variables that must be integrated into geological models. Urban expansion often obscures bedrock exposures, making geophysical surveys essential for urban planning.

For instance, construction projects in coastal Accra face challenges related to soil liquefaction and erosion due to the loose sandy deposits derived from weathered Voltaian sandstones. Conversely, stable foundations are more readily available on the harder Birimian basement rocks found in eastern Accra suburbs like Osu and Cantonments.

As Ghana continues to develop, the role of the modern geologist extends beyond mere exploration to include environmental stewardship, urban planning support, and economic advisory services. This study underscores the importance of maintaining high academic standards in geological education and research within Ghanaian institutions. The findings presented here serve as a foundational reference for future studies on the lithological evolution of West Africa’s cratonic margins. Future Work: Upcoming projects will focus on carbon sequestration potential in saline aquifers along the Ghanaian coast, further expanding our understanding of Accra's geological future.
