AUTHORS: Dr. Marco Rossi (PharmD), Dr. Giulia Esposito (MD), School of Pharmacy, University Federico II, Naples, Italy
INTRODUCTION
Background and Context in Italy, Naples
The pharmacist has undergone a radical transformation over the past two decades. In Italy, particularly within the bustling healthcare landscape of Naples, pharmacists are no longer limited to dispensing medications but serve as critical frontline providers of pharmaceutical care. This poster aims to evaluate how community-based pharmacists in Italy can enhance patient outcomes by taking on expanded clinical roles.
METHODS
This study utilized a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative data analysis from pharmacy records and qualitative interviews. We analyzed prescription fulfillment rates, patient adherence metrics, and health literacy improvements across four major pharmacy chains in central Naples over a twelve-month period. Additionally, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 licensed pharmacists regarding their perceived barriers to expanded practice.
RESULTS
Data indicated a significant 15% increase in chronic disease management efficiency where pharmacist-led consultations were implemented. Furthermore, patient satisfaction scores improved by an average of 20 points on standardized surveys when pharmacists provided structured medication therapy management (MTM). Qualitative findings highlighted that cultural proximity and the high density of pharmacies in Naples make this model uniquely viable.
DISCUSSION
The integration of advanced clinical services within community pharmacies in Italy represents a strategic opportunity to alleviate pressure on hospitals. In Naples, where the public healthcare system faces resource constraints, pharmacists act as accessible health guardians. Our results underscore that when empowered through training and legislative support, pharmacists can effectively manage hypertension and diabetes care plans.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the modern pharmacist is an indispensable asset to public health infrastructure. Expanding their scope of practice in Italy will foster a more resilient healthcare system capable of addressing the unique epidemiological challenges faced by populations like those living in Naples.
