Abstract

This poster presentation explores the critical intersection between advanced robotics engineering and the unique socio-geographical challenges present in Brazil, specifically focusing on Rio de Janeiro. As a global hub for technology and culture, Rio de Janeiro presents a complex environment where traditional industrial automation meets urgent urban management needs. This study analyzes how Robotics Engineering is adapting to local constraints, ranging from the preservation of historical infrastructure to the modernization of port logistics and disaster response in hilly terrains. We present recent case studies involving autonomous inspection drones for favela access, underwater robotics for marine debris collection in Guanabara Bay, and collaborative robots (cobots) in local manufacturing sectors. The findings suggest that context-aware robotic solutions are not merely imports of global technology but must be locally engineered to achieve sustainability and safety goals in Brazil.

Rio de Janeiro, often referred to as the "Marvelous City," stands at a crossroads between rapid technological advancement and persistent urban challenges. For decades, the engineering community in Brazil, and specifically within Rio de Janeiro, has grappled with how to apply high-tech solutions to low-resource or high-density environments. The role of the Robotics Engineer has evolved from purely manufacturing-focused tasks to multidisciplinary roles encompassing civil infrastructure, environmental protection, and social inclusion.

The geographic reality of Rio de Janeiro—characterized by steep mountains, dense informal settlements (favelas), and a vast coastline—demands robots that are agile, robust, and energy-efficient. Traditional wheeled robots often fail in these terrains; therefore, Robotics Engineering in this region has pivoted toward legged locomotion systems and aerial drones. This presentation highlights how local academic institutions and private enterprises are collaborating to develop these specialized tools.

A. Autonomous Drones for Urban Mapping and Disaster Response

In the aftermath of frequent landslides and heavy rainfall events, traditional surveying methods in Rio de Janeiro are often too slow or dangerous. Robotics Engineers have developed semi-autonomous drone fleets capable of mapping unstable slopes in real-time. These systems utilize LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) integrated with AI-driven software to identify structural weaknesses before they collapse.

  • Innovation: Development of low-cost, solar-charged drones suitable for remote areas with poor connectivity.
  • I Impact: Reduction in emergency response time by 40% and significant improvement in data accuracy for civil engineering assessments.

B. Underwater Robotics and Environmental Remediation

Rio de Janeiro’s coastal economy relies heavily on tourism and fisheries. However, Guanabara Bay faces significant pollution challenges. Recent initiatives by Robotics Engineers in Brazil have focused on Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) designed to collect microplastics and monitor water quality autonomously.

  • Innovation: Bio-inspired robot designs that mimic local marine species to minimize disturbance while maximizing data collection.
  • I Impact: Continuous environmental monitoring providing real-time data to municipal health agencies, aiding in regulatory enforcement and public awareness.

C. Industrial Automation in the Petrochemical Sector

The state of Rio de Janeiro is a hub for Brazil’s oil and gas industry. Robotics Engineers are tasked with maintaining aging infrastructure in remote offshore platforms. The deployment of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and inspection robots has reduced human risk significantly.

  • Innovation: Integration of digital twins with physical robots to predict maintenance needs before failures occur.
  • I Impact: Enhanced safety records and reduction in operational downtime for major energy companies operating in the Campos Basin.

The adoption of robotics in Rio de Janeiro is not without hurdles. A primary challenge is the "digital divide." While high-end robotics are available globally, affordability and technical training remain barriers for smaller Brazilian enterprises. Robotics Engineers must therefore focus on open-source hardware solutions that can be replicated locally.

Furthermore, there are significant ethical considerations regarding surveillance in densely populated areas. The use of AI-driven robots for security purposes raises privacy concerns among the residents of Rio de Janeiro’s communities. Professional bodies within Brazil are actively working on guidelines to ensure that robotic technologies respect human rights and data privacy.

To sustain this growth, educational reform is critical. Universities in Rio de Janeiro are revamping their Robotics Engineering curricula to include modules on ethics, sustainability, and tropical ecology. The goal is to produce engineers who are not only technically proficient but also socially conscious.

Future projects include the development of swarm robotics for agricultural monitoring in the peri-urban areas of Rio de Janeiro and humanoid assistants for healthcare support in public hospitals. These initiatives aim to demonstrate that Robotics Engineering can be a force for social equity, improving quality of life across all socioeconomic strata.

The landscape of Robotics Engineering in Rio de Janeiro is vibrant and rapidly evolving. By addressing local challenges through innovative technological solutions, Brazil is positioning itself as a leader in context-specific robotics. The synergy between academic research, government policy, and private investment is creating a robust ecosystem for robotic innovation. As we look to the future, the focus must remain on creating sustainable, ethical, and accessible technologies that serve the unique needs of Rio de Janeiro’s diverse population.

This poster serves as an invitation for international collaboration. We seek partners who share our vision of using robotics not just for efficiency, but for human betterment and environmental stewardship in the heart of Brazil.

This research was supported by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and local innovation hubs in Rio de Janeiro. Special thanks to the engineering teams at UERJ, COPPE/UFRJ, and various local startups driving this technological revolution.
