Background and Context

Lagos, the commercial hub of Nigeria, represents a paradox of immense economic potential and profound social challenge. As one of the fastest-growing megacities in Africa, Lagos faces complex socio-economic dynamics that require specialized intervention. The rapid urbanization rate has outpaced infrastructure development, leading to overcrowded slums such as Makoko and Ajegunle where basic sanitation is scarce.

In this volatile environment, the Social Worker emerges not merely as a counselor but as a critical agent of social change. The demand for professional social work in Nigeria Lagos has escalated due to the rising prevalence of youth unemployment, gender-based violence, child labor in informal sectors and substance abuse among adolescents. Despite these pressing issues historical underfunding and low public awareness regarding the profession have hindered optimal service delivery.

This poster presentation seeks to highlight the multifaceted role of Social Workers in addressing these systemic issues within the unique cultural and economic context of Nigeria Lagos.

Objectives of the Study

• To assess the current scope and impact of Social Work practice in Nigeria Lagos.
• To identify key challenges faced by Social Workers operating within public institutions (hospitals, schools) and private NGOs in Lagos State.
• To propose strategies for enhancing professional capacity building for Social Workers to better serve the urban poor and marginalized populations.

Methodology

This academic poster presents findings derived from a mixed-methods approach employed across various Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Nigeria Lagos. Quantitative data was gathered through structured questionnaires administered to 200 registered Social Workers practicing in Lagos State, including those affiliated with the National Welfare of Social Workers in Nigeria (NWSWN).

Qualitative insights were obtained through focus group discussions with beneficiaries, community leaders, and policy makers. The study specifically targeted high-density areas such as Surulere, Mushin and Ikeja to capture diverse socioeconomic realities. Ethical considerations including informed consent and confidentiality were strictly adhered to throughout the research process.

Key Findings

1. Mental Health Crisis: There is a significant correlation between rapid urbanization and mental health disorders among residents of Nigeria Lagos. Social Workers play a pivotal role in psycho-social support, yet there is a severe shortage of psychiatric social workers relative to the population size.

2. Child Protection: In many parts of Lagos street children are commonplace. Social Workers engage in rescue operations, family tracing and reintegration programs. However resource constraints often limit the scope of these interventions.

3. Gender-Based Violence (GBV): Social Workers in Lagos serve as frontline responders to GBV cases providing legal aid referrals, counseling and safe shelter coordination. The study reveals that community-based social work is more effective than purely institutional approaches in tackling deeply rooted patriarchal norms.
