The role of the Surgeon in modern healthcare systems is increasingly complex, requiring not only technical proficiency but also adaptability to new technologies and interdisciplinary collaboration. In Iran, the capital city of Tehran serves as a pivotal node for medical innovation. With a population exceeding nine million and numerous tertiary-care hospitals, Tehran hosts some of the most advanced surgical centers in Western Asia.


Historically, Iranian surgeons have been renowned for their resilience and skill in high-volume settings. However, recent years have seen a shift towards specialized subspecialties such as neurosurgery, cardiovascular surgery, and robotic-assisted procedures. This transition is driven by both domestic demand for higher quality care and international accreditation efforts aimed at bringing Iranian medical standards in line with global benchmarks.


This poster presentation seeks to highlight the specific challenges and opportunities facing the Surgical community in Tehran. By analyzing data from major academic centers, we aim to provide insights into how the Surgeon's role is evolving amidst economic sanctions, technological embargoes, and cultural shifts within Iranian society.


To accurately assess the current state of surgical practice in Iran, specifically within Tehran, this study utilized a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data was collected from electronic health records across five major public hospitals in Tehran over a period of twenty-four months. Key metrics included post-operative complication rates, length of hospital stay, and readmission frequencies for common surgical procedures such as appendectomies, cholecystectomies, and orthopedic interventions.


Qualitative data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with practicing Surgeons in Tehran. These interviews focused on barriers to technology adoption, peer collaboration mechanisms, and the perceived impact of international conferences on local surgical practices. The sample size included thirty senior surgeons and forty resident physicians, ensuring a broad representation of experience levels within the Iranian healthcare system.



The analysis revealed several significant trends regarding the practice of Surgery in Tehran. Firstly, there has been a measurable increase in the adoption of minimally invasive techniques. Approximately forty-five percent of general surgical procedures performed in Tehran teaching hospitals now utilize laparoscopic approaches, up from thirty percent five years ago.


Secondly, the integration of telemedicine for pre-operative consultations and post-operative follow-ups has accelerated following global health crises. Surgeons in Tehran are increasingly relying on digital platforms to maintain continuity of care, although bandwidth limitations in some peripheral areas remain a challenge.


Furthermore, patient satisfaction scores have improved significantly when surgeons utilize shared decision-making models. In Tehran, where doctor-patient relationships are traditionally hierarchical, a shift towards collaborative care has been associated with better compliance and reduced anxiety among patients undergoing elective surgeries.


The findings suggest that the contemporary Surgeon in Iran, particularly those operating in a metropolitan context like Tehran, must be more than just a technician of the human body. They are becoming managers of complex care pathways and advocates for their patients within constrained resource environments.


One major challenge identified is access to advanced medical devices due to international sanctions. While Iranian manufacturers have made strides in producing local alternatives, high-end robotic systems remain scarce in public hospitals in Tehran. Consequently, Surgeons often rely on traditional open techniques or basic laparoscopy, which may impact long-term outcomes compared to global standards.


However, the intellectual capital within Tehran's medical schools is robust. The emphasis on rigorous academic training ensures that new generations of Surgeons are well-versed in evidence-based medicine. This strong educational foundation allows them to adapt quickly when new technologies become available or when they can leverage open-source surgical data and international literature to refine their techniques.


Additionally, the role of female Surgeons in Tehran has expanded significantly. Women now constitute nearly half of medical graduates in Iran, leading to a more diverse surgical workforce that better reflects the demographics of the patient population. This diversity is crucial for improving communication and trust between Surgeons and their patients in Iranian society.


In conclusion, the trajectory of surgical care in Iran is positive but faces distinct structural hurdles. The Surgeon in Tehran stands at a crossroads between tradition and modernity. By continuing to invest in medical education, fostering international scientific exchanges despite political tensions, and encouraging local innovation in medical device manufacturing, Iran can sustain its position as a regional leader in healthcare.


Future research should focus on long-term outcomes of minimally invasive surgeries performed by Iranian Surgeons and the economic impact of adopting robotic-assisted systems in public hospitals across Tehran. Collaboration between government health policymakers, academic institutions, and private sector investors will be key to unlocking the full potential of surgical excellence in this vibrant city.
