The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has embarked on an ambitious journey of educational reform, driven by the overarching goals of Vision 2030. Within this context, Riyadh stands as a microcosm of national ambition and change. The city is home to some of the most prestigious secondary institutions in the Middle East, attracting top talent from across the region. However, with these expectations comes significant pressure on educators.
The role of the Secondary Teacher in Saudi Arabia has shifted dramatically over the past decade. No longer solely deliverers of content, teachers are now expected to be facilitators of critical thinking, digital literacy experts, and mentors for holistic student development. This poster aims to explore these multifaceted responsibilities and outline a path forward for sustaining high-quality education in Riyadh’s secondary sector.
Despite substantial investments in school infrastructure and curriculum updates, several challenges persist for Secondary Teachers in Saudi Arabia. First, there is a gap between traditional pedagogical methods and the innovative teaching strategies required by modern curricula. Second, burnout among educators in high-pressure environments like Riyadh remains a concern due to increasing administrative burdens.
Furthermore while English proficiency and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering Mathematics) subjects are prioritized many teachers lack adequate support to effectively integrate these subjects into their daily instruction. Without addressing these issues the quality of education may stagnate hindering the Kingdom’s ability to produce competitive graduates for the global market.
This study employs a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Data was collected from 500 secondary teachers across public and private institutions in Riyadh during the academic year 2023-2024. The survey measured variables such as job satisfaction perceived competency in digital tools alignment with Vision 203 goals frequency of professional development opportunities.
Additionally semi structured interviews were conducted with thirty school principals and education policymakers to gain deeper insights into administrative support systems and future planning. This comprehensive approach ensures that the findings reflect both individual teacher experiences and systemic institutional perspectives.
- Digital Divide: While most schools in Riyadh are equipped with smart boards and tablets only 45% of teachers reported feeling confident integrating these tools into lesson plans effectively.
- Satisfaction Levels: Job satisfaction scores were moderately high among native Arabic speaking educators but lower among expatriate teachers due to concerns regarding long-term visa stability and cultural integration support.
- Vision Alignment: 78% of respondents believed that current training programs adequately address the objectives of Vision 2030 however only 30% felt they received sufficient ongoing professional development post-implementation.
- Continuous Professional Learning (CPL): Establishing mandatory quarterly workshops focused on emerging technologies inclusive pedagogies and mental health awareness for educators.
- Mentorship Programs: Creating a structured mentorship network where experienced teachers in Riyadh guide newer entrants fostering a culture of collaboration rather than competition.
- Tech-Enhanced Pedagogy Certification: Introducing a certification level for teachers who demonstrate proficiency in blended learning environments thereby incentivizing skill acquisition through recognition and potential salary increments.
This framework aims to empower Secondary Teachers by providing them with the tools confidence and support necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing educational ecosystem. It also aligns directly with national efforts to foster innovation and creativity among students preparing them for future careers.
By implementing targeted professional development initiatives fostering supportive work environments and leveraging technology effectively Saudi Arabia can ensure that its secondary schools remain centers of excellence. The recommendations presented in this poster offer actionable steps for policymakers school administrators and teachers themselves to collaborate towards achieving these goals ultimately contributing to the broader socio-economic vision of the Kingdom.
