The first of a four page (front to back) newsletter from the S.C. Advocates for Women on Boards and Commissions printed with black ink on blue paper. Editor and Chair Barbara W, Moxon provides a status update for bill S.284, which has stalled in a House Judiciary subcommittee. She urges recipients to contact Representative Jeff Young of Sumter by phone or mail to express support for it, as he "sees no need for the bill."

A section entitled "Opportunities to Serve" encourages recipients to apply to three available positions: one on the S.C. Department of Transportation Commission and two on the State Board of Education.

On the second page, a summary of the S.C. Advocates for Women on Boards and Commissions' meeting with women legislators earlier in the month is provided. The problem of many counties failing to maintain records of their local board members is discussed. It is recommended women contact the respective head of county legislative delegations to promote up-to-date documentation of serving board and commission members.

On the third page, the purpose of bill S.284 is established as requiring the Office of Human Resources of the Budget and Control Board to "monitor the composition of state boards and commissions and publicize positions available statewide." An argument is provided about why the bill is necessary, which boards and commissions would be effected, and how it would be helpful to legislators and state officials.

On the fourth page, additional information about bill S.284 is continued from page three, with a discussion as to why the advertising of positions should be occur quarterly as opposed to annually and the estimated cost of implementing the bill.

The conclusion calls for parties interested in serving to remain informed about the composition of boards and available positions.
