Reactionary Poles Seen Danger
Sir: Tune and again I have to explain to my fellow Canadians that a majority of the Polish people do not share the views of the diplomatic officials of the Polish government-in-exile insofar as the attitude toward Russia is concerned. Poles in this country are democratically inclined and wish to see closer collaboration between all Allies. The government officials, on the other hand, are ultra reactionary and definitely anti-Russian. This situation is very disturbing. For these gentlemen enjoy diplomatic immunity only to use it for activities that are detrimental to Canada and to the Allied unity. Your columnist, Mr. W. L. Clark, disclosed in The Star of April 20 that the Polish government keeps large numbers of diplomatic officials in Allied countries. Here in Canada we had two consular offices and the legation, each with a large staff of workers. And now a new consulate has been opened in Toronto. One naturally asks what these people are doing. Even in times of peace there was no foreign trade to speak of between Poland and Canada. But now with no trade at all and other duties cut to the minimum, what are thee officials and their staffs doing m Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Toronto? Well, for one thing, they are very busy trying to keep Canadian citizens of Polish descent in line with antiquated polices of their government in London. It may not be what their diplomatic standing allows, but they worry very little about that. Let .me give you just one very recent instance: The Polish consul general from Mon treal, Dr. T. Brzezinski. arrived in Windsor on April 20. He held a meeting at the Veterans' Hall. Langlois avenue. Only trusted people were t!-lowed in. It is not hard to imagine what message he brought, since he could not trust to face a representative gathering. Polish-Canadians are fully behind our war effort. But they view with apprehension what is going on as a result of continuous meddling of consular officials of the Polish government in Canadian affairs. A deliberate effort is being made to use Polish section of Canadian community to support adventurous schemes of reactionary old country politicians. It's time someone took notice of it. J. K..
