The Spring Festival holiday was prolonged,
and all public spaces throughout China were closed to prevent infection.
Because of this, people were bored out of their minds and turned their
attention to the internet. A common pastime was to photoshop surgical or N95
masks onto social media profile photos or memes. New memes were devised also,
to lift spirits. One included here shows a large crowd of panda-eared people (a
common aspect of Chinese memes) coughing and text indicating their identity as “netizens
of Wuhan City”. This meme means to raise a laugh, as viruses cannot spread
through the internet as the meme subtly suggests. Another meme shows the
panda-man shoving coronoviruses into the mouth of a dragon. On the Chinese
internet, the Dragon(Long, or Loong), a ancient cultural symbol of the Middle
Kingdom, is in fact seen as a symbol of “being talkative”, because of its
mythical ability to eject large quantities of water, similar to the
fire-breathing of the Dragons of the west. The meme is the equivalence of “Shut
up”, jokingly threatening to inflict disease upon the most talkative annoyance.
