In the early 1980s, at the height of Dr. Slump's success, a group of fans created a fan club to share information about the Akira Toriyama manga and his works. This fan club was called Toriyama Akira Hozonkai (\u9ce5\u5c71\u660e \u4fdd\u5b58 \u4f1a). Initially it was an unofficial fan club like many others, but later it was accepted by Shueisha and Akira Toriyama himself.
With the support of Shueisha and Akira Toriyama himself, who was willing to stay in contact with the group and create original content for its members, the fan club grew rapidly. In the midst of this, in 1982 a club newsletter was published: BIRD LAND PRESS.
BIRD LAND PRESS was a bimonthly newsletter, with a circulation of 10,000 copies, intended for members of Akira Toriyama Honzonkai. They are in B6 format and about 26 pages each. The vast majority of covers were designed by Toriyama, as well as many illustrations that made up their content.
Together with BIRD LAND PRESS, members received many gifts such as buttons, key chains, posters and cards with Toriyama illustrations never before (or after) published.
