"The Legend of Grand Rapids" is located on the south wall outside Ford Fieldhouse of the Grand Rapids Community College campus in downtown at the address: 111 Lyon Street NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
The frieze was created by Lumen Winter (1908-1982), see also, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumen_Martin_Winter
The wall plaque at lower left of frieze carries the following description. The leftmost section of the Legend is shown in a separate photo, https://archive.org/details/legendofgr2

The 5x60 foot bas relief frieze, commissioned in celebration of the bicentennial year, was designed and sculpted by the artist at his studios in New York and Italy using marble taken from Italy's famous Mount Altisimo. The artwork depicts Michigan history, mythology, industry, education and culture.

"... The left section of the frieze depicts Western Michigan's natural, historical, and mythological origin. The center panels develop the natural resources into industry, which proves the fruit of our labors. The aspirations for aesthetic, spiritual and physical development conclude the right section of the frieze." (Grand Rapids Junior College "Collegiate" newspaper, November 26, 1975)

Lumen Winter, a native of Grand Rapids, graduated from Grand Rapids Junior College in 1928. He went on to make his mark as a designer, painter and sculptor. His many credits include a mural at the Washington headquarters for the AFL-CIO, the re-creation of da Vinci's "Last Supper" for the Main Refectory at Notre Dame University and a fifty-ton sculptural panel mural for the Church of St. Paul the Apostle in New York.
